Update: Found one and sold it... Now I need an 83 or 84

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for my first Cruiser and would like a Diesel BJ42 or BJ40. I'm located in Vancouver Canada. I've got about 5K and could possibly come up with another couple grand for a real "nice" truck (I know 7K won't buy me a show stopper!)

I've got a truck and trailer and am limited to basically Oregon, Washinton, BC and Alberta.

I'm open to anything, even a rusted out heap that'll be a long term project. I'd prefer a running one but I'll take what I can get!

The best part! A $250 finder's fee to the person who assists in finding the perfect truck that I end up buying!

Please email me at seanjenn@shaw.ca with any info or tips!

Thanks alot!

that amount will get you an okay gasser...or a 60 series...

i haven't seen a diesel 40 for that price in decades...

seriously, save a bit more coin and then go after something that is actually worth buying.

either way best of luck in your search.

cheers

Hi, thanks for the input. I know diesel rig prices have risen but I'm a broke student who really wants to get into a diesel Cruiser. Sometimes they come up is rough shape for 4K or 5K, sometimes cheaper and often alot more. I just thought I'd try...

no harm in trying...my advice? buy a civic and save your money...
best of luck in the search

actually...i was in touch with a guy from nelson about five months back who had a 78 BJ42 for sale. not at all bad shape, and i seriously considered buying it, if it wasn't for the fact that i need the space of a 60. anyway, he had it listed for $4500! just saw another one in Ontario for around the same price; althoughh i don't know the viability of that. good deals exist though, and i would WAY rather go without a vehicle for awhile, than buy a civic until i can afford the BJ42...you'll be paying insurance, gas, and any maintenance/repairs on that car which will ultimately drain your bank account.
just depends on how patient you are...

Thanks TAIT, I agree that buying a temp car would be to costly. It's not really relevent but I do have a little Mitsubishi that gets me around and I can't have a Cruiser as my sole vehicle because I do way too much highway driving.

Last summer I took a look at this guy's 1980 BJ40 in Abbotsford. I was just learning about Cruisers and how to weld I still kick myself for passing it up. It was 4K Canadian and ran like a top, 180KM (that's what, 110 miles?). Would have needed a whole new tub (no rust from the doors forward) but here's the kicker, it came with 3 complete hard tops no rust (2 with perfect glass), four full hard doors no rust, four ambulance doors no rust, brand new soft top and soft doors unopened, three rear heaters, two brand new hard half doors, PTO and a spare winch, half of the necessary new panels, and to boot a mounted hitch and small trailer to haul it all home.

I know now the parts would have easily covered the cost of the truck, but I guess that's the one that got away. Now I'd gladly spend 5K on the truck alone! I'll just keep my eyes open!

Oh I forgot to mention this is one of the cases where it was the original owner. He had the original brochure and window sticker, receipt, and a darn log book with every oil change and maintenance since 1980! He also had a half dozen Toyota repair books and reference books. It was pretty cool... :(

Hey, I'm a student too and I went out and bought myself a '82 BJ42 (not for a daily driver but as a project). I spent 5K and got a very rusty unit...its been one full year and I finally now only have a rust free body (I had to cut out everything...and I mean everything...from the front seat mounts back). It is a really heafty invesment...but totaly worth it! I say go for it and buy one!

I will wait for the finders FEE

You can find 40s in this price range but they will need work and you will be looking for a while. My suggestion is pick up a BJ60. For 5k you should get something reasonable with a decent frame and a body that isn't completely falling apart.

Wayne claims that you should just save your money and buy something better, but I disagree. Having owned a mint HJ61 and several CDN BJ60s as well as a BJ70, I can tell you that the old rusted utilitarian BJ60s have their own unique appeal.. for one thing, it's easier to justify wheeling them ;)

There are so many landcruisers out in BC how can you not find one. Im from Onatrio and we don't have many at all.

That's because Ontario is the Salt Capital of North America, and all cruisers have rusted into dust. The rustiest car I ever owned (bj70) came from there.

You are right. These guys use salt on days we don't need it. That's why if I buy another cruiser I would head out west to pick one up. Give me 3 days and I could find one in British Columbia... maybe. How many cruisers do you see on a good day.

ummm, you don't go to BC looking for a good Cruiser. BC has "pretty" cruisers but rusted frames.
Ontario has ... well ... rust buckets. but if you shop around here you will be surprised at what you can find in real nice shape.
Quebec and east are all rust buckets.
Alberta used to have nice cruisers but since they started using that chemical a few years back they too are rust prone.
Manitoba and Saskabush are good locations to shop.

but in reality, imports are the only way you will find a decent cruiser these days.
