Howdy, ih8mud.
I'm J, a gunsmith and rock climbing guide out of Jackson Wyoming and LA. I've previously lived out of a JKU purchased on Expedition Portal, and am now traveling in a flatbed pop top self-converted 2019 long bed Cummins. I'm looking to add an 80 series for tighter trails and less stressful trips around town.
I've been at this search for several months and have frustratingly walked from several misrepresented trucks so far. I'm posting here because I'm hoping the right one is likely sitting in a garage owned by someone on this forum.
Spec, in priority order:
1. Factory triple lockers — non-negotiable. CDL pin 7 / dash-switch work fine.
2. Clean frame and body. SW or CA provenance preferred. Surface patina is fine; scaling, perforation, rocker rot, or body-mount cancer is not.
3. 1994+ for the 1FZ-FE.
4. Sub-200k miles preferred.
5. Detailed documented maintenance. The items I care about most: PHH, HHM, knuckle rebuild, birfields, vacuum hoses under the intake, OEM cooling components, valve adjustment intervals, and HG history if applicable. Records are weighted heavily.
6. Honest paint and interior — original or single quality respray in factory color. Cracked dashes are fine. Trying to avoid the coverups I've been running into on BaT and CaB.
Build items I'm happy to pay for:
ARB-class bull bar with integrated winch mount, Warn or comparable winch, 4x4Labs / Slee / Metal Tech rear bumper with swing-out tire carrier, WKOR / Slee / Metal Tech sliders, Dobinsons / Icon lift in a sensible spec, quality A/Ts on factory or quality aftermarket wheels, Rigid / BD / KC aux lighting, ARB or Safari snorkel, pin 7 mod. A stripped honest truck is more interesting to me than one built in a spec I'll re-do.
Build items I'm not interested in (priced in or not):
Roof racks, RTTs, awnings, drawer systems, cheap eBay LED bars, body-color or non-bull-bar front bumpers, turbo or supercharger conversions, 35"+ tires, loud exhausts, audio builds.
Process:
PPI at an LC specialist at my expense before I buy. Transparent results to you either way. My primary shops by region:
- SoCal: SD Trux (San Diego), Cruiser Tech (Laguna Hills), TLC4x4 (Chatsworth)
- NV: BTB Products (Henderson)
- UT: A Rusted Development (Kamas), Cruiser Outfitters (Murray)
- WY: A1 Auto (Jackson)
- MT: Overland Cruisers (Bozeman)
- ID: South to North Land Cruisers (Boise)
If your truck is near any of those I'll arrange the inspection there. If it isn't, I'll cover transport to the nearest one or fly to an LC-knowledgeable shop you suggest. Open to flying anywhere in the western US and driving it home. Eastern US considered only if provenance is unambiguously inland / dry and records are exceptional.
Budget:
For a documented, factory-locked, dry-climate truck with the maintenance items above, I'm a buyer from the teens up to the high 20s depending on miles, records depth, and build.
If you have my truck, or you know someone quietly thinking about selling theirs, please reply or DM. I'm happy to hop on a phone call, send proof of funds, and move quickly when the right truck surfaces.
Thanks for your time,
-J
