So it begins. I have always wanted a diesel Landcruiser 80 series. Why? I have no clue. I can't explain it. Started looking on here as well as craigslist. Then one day on vancouver craigslist, it showed up. It had all the right mods and no rust. It was a Japan import. The steering wheel is on the "wrong side"

Brian (previous owner) was just such an awesome person to deal with. I could not have asked for a better person to get the LC from. I landed in Vancouver quite late (11:40pm) and despite that he came to pick me up from the airport. We introduced ourselves as I was frantically searching for a place where I could suck down my first cigarette after the long ass flight then proceeded towards the parking garage.

Then my eyes locked on to what I knew instantly would lead to a love affair. There she sat under a dimly lit light. I immediately had a good feeling about this one. On the way to his place he gave me the run down on the temperature and boost gauges. She fired up instantly and we were on our way. I expected the diesel to be a lot louder and I expected smoke to be coming out. But nothing. She just purred along. She does not even rattle. How can there be no rattle???

The next morning in daylight I climbed all over the cruiser and everything seemed in order other than the AC which was mentioned in the ad. Brian obviously took great care of his ride. it had been maintained at ATEB and EBI which from my understanding are two very good locations to have work done on the ride.

We proceeded to a broker who took care of the paperwork as well as the temp plates and insurance and now I am a proud owner of an HDJ80! :bounce:

So today after leaving Brians place with my new Toy, I just drove around Vancouver to get used to the RHD steering and surprisingly that took like 5 minutes. I am completely comfortable with it now.

Its still early in the day and I have nothing planned so I decided it was time to replace the ancient head unit with something that at least had bluetooth connectivity so I would have some decent tunes. I would hate to drive 4432km's just listening to radio. Got a little cheap JVC unit, took apart the dash and now I am ready for the drive.

Tomorrow morning it time for the border crossing. Apparently its quite a painless process of filling out some paperwork at the customs and border office.

I had a great nights sleep and now its time to pack up and finally start the drive. Im a bit nervous about the border crossing. Never imported a vehicle before. Hopefully all goes well. I believe I have my paperwork in order. Wish me luck. Next post will be Stateside.

Good luck on your trip and border crossing! If you want to take a detour to Snohomish I'm home all day. Let me know if you have any issues

Nice. Good luck on your return trip.

I'm officially stateside!! I can't believe how smooth that went. I swear it's more difficult ordering a burger.

The guys at customs were awesome. They filled out all the forms. All I had to do was sign two documents and pay $172.

I'm a happy camper!

Stopped for some coffee and got mobbed by a group of Australians. I guess the steering is on the correct side after all

"Your steering is on the wrong side!" "Actually, it's on the right side." The jokes write themselves, lol. Congrats on getting it across the line with no issues! Where is your final destination?

Some day I'd like to have a turbo diesel 80 series. Other than it being a turbo diesel are there any unique options it has that the US market ones didn't get?

Thank you!!

That thing with the steering happens all day long :bang: The final destination is Atlanta GA.

I can't quite say what is unique to the vehicle other that it being Diesel. Whats definitely really really awesome is that I filled up in Vancouver and now I am in Yakima WA and still have over a tank of gas. And I made quite a few detours. Folding mirrors and headlight washer seem to be unique also.

I met my first mudder today @Rock40. What an awesome guy! The best part about meeting him was that I got to see what a LHD version of my truck looks like under the hood. Rock40, thank you for the time and the beers. I really appreciate it man!! I will definitely be in touch with you.

Two almost identical Cruisers. One has the steering on the right side and the other has it on the right side :flipoff2:

The scenery in Washington State is definitely something to behold. It is absolutely beautiful. I really look forward to spending more time here in the future. I wish I could take more photos but being that I am the only one driving makes it difficult.

Tomorrow morning Im headed to Bend, OR. Then I can finally get this thing in the dirt and put my very own pin striping on ;)

EDIT: is on the lower line/area of your post.

Great looking truck! I am a diesel lover as well, I live in Spain and imported mine from the UK. Mine is not a JDM but the UK version. The JDM's got some great stuff the UK versions did not get. IIRC they got a larger tyre size as standard, sit a couple of inches taller, often have the dual AC and or console freezer. Most do not have F & R lockers, but they are easier to fit that say the AC system. Folding mirrors not on our UK spec, and of course fantastic MPG. Some have the extra fuel tank.

Enjoy!

regards

Dave

Just a slight correction, you don't have a half a tank of gas left, you have a half tank of fuel. Congrats on the new rig! Have an enjoyable drive back to Georgia...

Lookin' Good! You did fairly well getting over to Yakima yesterday leaving Snohomish at 5. How'd things go over the mountain pass to the Eastern side of the state? Weather over there looks beautiful

Nice meeting you in the REI parking lot here in Bend, OR.
Nice rig! Will be following your build.
Good luck on the rest of your trip and congrats! :flipoff2:

Am I glad you told me to go that way. I can't thank you enough. The cruiser performed very well. No hiccups so far. It does great on highways cruising at 75mph. I went on a few easy trails here and there. I wish I could have done other trails but this is my ride home. Don't want to break it just yet :grinpimp:. Made it to Bend, OR. Had a good time there. I have a cousin who just opened a bar there.

Great meeting you too man. To bad we did not have more time. I managed to squeeze in Idaho but now I am in Moab :flipoff2: Im gonna go out and drive a little. Will post pics and vids tonight.

Moab was awesome, I was there in Sept/2014 in the 40 and would love to go back. Fins and Things is a fairly mild trail close to town that has some decent ledges and up/downs if you're looking for something to do.

You are seriously the gift that keeps on giving!!!!! Fins & things was awesome!!!!!! Waking up at sunrise to go back. You guys are so lucky being so close to this place. Some parts are steeper than I was comfortable taking the cruiser on, but it did it without any issues. I do have to get rid of that stupid uhaul looking hitch thats bolted on the bottom of the bumper. That thing got kinda banged up :bang:. Well good riddance! :hillbilly:

Im so tempted to do some of the other trails but this is my ride home. But then again there are plenty of repair shops around moab. We will see. The one thing that really sucks about driving alone is that I can not get any action shots. Im going to have to drag my wife over here soon after I have done some work on the rig.

For those of you who have never been to Moab, I can not recommend it highly enough!! Here a little teaser video of a canyon drive by the colorado river. Sorry its not HD. Internet aint that great where I am right now. I will load all the videos in HD when I get a better connection

Great looking rig! I see alot of these here in Japan, hoping to bring one back myself. Keep us updated and stay in touch, Id like to meet up and see it in person when Im on leave in March!
