Well, I should never have assumed, although Ken was right, and I meant it more as a general statement. Anyway, it is just your kind of highly experienced newbie I was writing about when I posted on the FAQ thread. I look forward to you padding the forum with your insights!

By the way, what is it like to be so old? I mean, you must remember when dirt was young!

Old isn't so bad. You do slow down a bit. I took the kayak out this weekend and couldn't get but about 6 miles of paddling before I was worn out ;~}

Yeah, we couldn't do any mud bogging in the old days. The rocks had not yet broken down into dirt yet back then.

I'm glad you guys are getting along now.

Cruiserwanted - Did you getr anywhere on your problem? We always like to know results. This helps us either inflate our ego (I was right) or lets us know you screwed up (JK) describing the problem. Seriously, it helps us and others know if we are on the right track and it becomes educational for all of us.

Romer,

Have not gotten anywhere yet. Hoping to get further tonight. I think I have big problems as last night started to work on it and noticed one of my instrument gauge lights was staying on even when key is not in the ignition. I talked about having grounding problem with this before as I noticed they would not come on unless side was touching metal (back of instrument cluster or side of the cruiser) I hate electrical problems as I know nothing and have no tools for them. I need to go to sears and just buy eveything for diagnosing problems. Wanted to get a compression tester for a while now might as well load up. I will keep you posted. The most fustrating thing for me right now is can not start it. Everytime go to start it click, click, click. Jump it, let it run 10-20 minutes. Try to start it 5 minutes later click, click, click. Major drain. I will keep you posted. Thanks for your concern.

I'd put a full charge on your battery then disconnect it after you run it, even the smallest thing staying on will kill the battery and if it gets drained enough, it will permanently die.
I'm working on wiring issues right now and have decided to install a battery disconnect inside the cab just in case of electrical fires. Much easier to put out W/O juice running to it.

The lights are one of the circuits that can run w/o the ignition key on. If the panel ights are on when the light switch is off, then you have a short circuit somewhere. If the lights only come on when the panel is touching the body metal, this is normal as the panel must be grounded to complete the circuit. You need to do the drill suggested in the second post above to isolate the circuit involved in the short. Then you follow the wire (no matter if this means cutting apart the cable harness) in that circuit from the fuse block looking for where it is shorted to the panel lights. Look for metal connectors that are contacting something else or places where the insulation is borken or cut.

The back of the instrument cluster is hot on my cluster. Don't know about a 70 though. Maybe someithing is pressed against it. Have you taken the cluste out. Just undo those two scres and pull it out an inch and see if that makes a diff.

OK so I hooked up the craftsman engine analyer. red to positive, black ground, green to coil and it read 9 volts. When tryed to start it 4 volts. Pulled the fuses one at a time and each one volt meter rose until 10 volts at the end.

??? :-\ What would you suggest next.

:cheers:

There are sooooooooooo many things that could be causing this issue, you need to isolate circuts via the fuse panel, after disconnecting the battery from the vehicle, and fully charging it so that it has 12 volts.

Good luck!
