I was going to post this in the main 80 series tech section but there are way too many opinions there.

Does it really matter if I replace my windshield with OE vs aftermarket glass? A qualified glass guy is replacing the windshield after the body shop fixes the rust around the frame. The truck has a Pilkington glass and it's leaking. I printed out the fsm procedure for glass install for the guy so that angle is covered.

Any input from people who live in my climate?

I went OEM b/c I didn't want to worry about it. It seems it's more about the OEM gasket and procedure vs the glass. Is the Pilkington glass broken, chipped or pitted? If not I'd try to reuse it. Besides OEM all other 80 glass is made in China now so if your Pilkington is good just get it resealed properly.

2 big stone chips in it sadly. Shop coat for oe is around 560-580. Just trying to save a few bucks if possible

I think I got my OEM windshield for around $375 at Conicelli.

Looks like $400 but every now and then they do 10% off deals if you're on their email list.

Did you pick it up? Shipping is 375 to me. Conshohocken is not that far from me

did an aftermarket on one of mine.....but i cant remember which one.....think it was the green 93.
had the green tint across the top...which i liked. i provided an oe gasket, didnt have any problems.

My '97 LX450 has factory glass. Installation involved a special gasket and glue process. There has been no leakage. Over the past 12 years its accumulated 3 good rock chips. None of them have grown and the vehicle still passes inspection (I learned that they use an [imaginary] 8-1/2x11 space directly in front of the driver's eyes; if no chip there and none of the other chips are growing, then it passes). So stick with what you have and have it installed properly. My 2 cents.

Check these guys out. No reason to life with chips when they can be fixed for free. Windshield Repair & Replacement | Safelite

Had the LX replaced a couple of years ago and the cammo truck last year. Both factory glass, both at Safelite. Had to send the cammo truck back for leaks, but after more sealant it's been fine.

As long as you don't have the factory gold tint package the windows seemed fairly reasonable.

Safelite did my Tundra...it leaked. The guy did not use "the machine" to install the seal, and it got pinched.

They came out and pulled the windshield again, and supposedly fixed it.

We'll see.

Safelite came out and replaced the windshield on my Yukon. Just out of warranty (a year and a couple months), it cracked - clearly coming out of the side and not from any impact. To their credit, they still replaced it again - this time in their shop. This weekend I just found the windshield is leaking (two years since second replacement). I'll see what I can do, but that's the last I'm using Safelite.

I've heard too many horror stories of Safelite, and you guys seem to confirm it.

I've never used safelite because I've felt they're overpriced. I've usually gone with a local installer and seem to have better luck with quality. I feel local installers build their reputation on such. Down here in Delaware I use a company call Delaware Auto glass and they seem fairly priced and unfortunately I don't know how those glasses are fairing, I've gotten rid of those cars but for the couple years I did have them I had no issues.

I can't speak to a windshield replacement or safelite. But it used to be Cindy Rowe autoglass. And I used them to fill windshield chips. Insurance paid it 100%
