Hey Guys,

I've found a lot of good info using the Search for windshield washers but can't seem to find the answer to my question. My '78 has the nozzle at the top center of the windshield. I can trace the tube from the reservoir/pump thru the firewall and into the cab but I just find the unattached end of this tube. I understand there is a steel tube inside the windshield frame and I can see this in the knock-out next to the rear view mirror that the nozzle attaches to with a short piece of black tubing. My question is, where does the other end of the steel tube outlet the windshield frame, i.e. where do I attach the tube from the reservoir?

Maybe it's staring me right in the face but I can't seem to see it!

Thanks,
Pete

Fold down your windshield and you will see it at the base of the right side vertical. It's probably rusted-up, so pull some new plastic hose past it through the windshield.

I have to pull the windshield down to reattach the tube from the pump? That means I'd have to undo the top and I really don't want to do that as everything is tight and neat there. The inside of the windshield looks to be clean and rust-free from what I can see through the hole at the nozzle. If there's no way to reattach the tube save lowering the windshield, I might just add a hood nozzle as much as I'd like to stay original.

Thanks,
Pete

^^^ i literally just went through that these past 2 weeks. i have a snake camera and scoped the inside of the windshield and underneath the glove box area. its virtually impossible to do without putting the frame down. i park on the street and have no way in sight to put it down either so i installed the OEM hood mounted nozzle. it was a huge bummer because that was literally the last thing that didnt work on my 40.

i did say virtually impossible. i tried snacking some heavy bailing wire from both directions to fish a new hose through the frame. you might have some luck with a real sprung fish tape, but it will take luck and time and laying in a very awkward position.

Gotta get the one going on my '78 too, so I should connect it before putting on the hardtop????o_O

I wouldn't say it's impossible without lowering the windshield, but it's certainly not easy. You can blow string from the bottom to the center of the windshield, or from the center down, using compressed air. Once you get the string through cleanly, you can use it to pull in new tubing. Of course, it's all easier with the windshield down.

Thanks guys. What I can't seem to see or find is where the tubing connects at the bottom of the windshield, or where the tubing exits the windshield vertical maybe I should say. Is it in the glove box? Behind the glove box? I'm gonna have to live with the sore neck I'll get from trying to see up in there I guess.

open the glove box door and you will see the harness for the windshield wiper motor running across the top from left to right. follow the harness with your hand from the outside right of the glove box up into the windshield frame. there is a large hole where the harness goes into and you can feel with a finger or two the hard steel washer fluid pipe. it is within the frame, does not extend past it. you could try blindly taking pictures of it with your cell phone camera if you really want to try and "see" it.

This is perhaps one of the most lame brain designs Toyota did to the FJ40. It's true, you have to remove the hardtop to fix the windshield washers. If you really want to avoid this hassle, buy the earlier nozzle and put it in hood where the blank is now. Run the tube there and forget about it.

Thanks! I'll give it a try.

This is definitely my default solution!

p/n for the new nozzle
85035-60050
usually cheapest at toyotapartszone.com, though now that cruisercorps is doing free shipping for another week or 2, i think they have the best price at the moment.

Yep, much simpler. Plus the metal tube that they ran in the frame for the squirter gets rust in it and clogs up, so you have to bypass with some plastic tubing.

Yes.

That is what I did.

It was a PITA to get new tubing for the washer/squirter. Where is the best place to buy this?

i got silicone aquarium tubing from amazon. heat and rot resistant more than vinyl. only small issue is softer wall, easier to kink if not careful

Just for the fun of it I checked my 3/79 FJ40. Not sure if they extended the steel tube from 78 but I could feel the tube with no problem. This is a long story but this is one I got back from my daughter when she got divorce and a project so removing the top to install the tube won't be a issue. If it wasn't I think I could get the tubing on no problem. What I would do is stretch the end out as much as I could so I could get is started easier. Won't look the neatest but you can't see it anyway. Leave a little extra tubing in that area so if you do lower the windshield you have enough tubing.

can you tell me where you see or feel the tube?

you cant see it with the windshield up. i promise. i had to use a snake camera to see it. im 99% sure it does not extend past the frame. like i said, run your hand up the harness for the wiper motor and in that same hole will be a small steel tube.

Here is the steel tube I could feel. First picture shows the route of the wiper harness running across the top of the glove box and up into the windshield on the far right. Second picture was taken from below the dash looking up between the body and plate in the glove box. I could feed a tube on this without much problem. One way is attach a rod to the stretched section of tube. Use the rod to start and push the tube on. Then cut the rod in the glove box so it won't be seen. At a later date if you do remove the top later you can fold the windshield down and clean it up. Just be sure to leave extra tubing.

I thought that was too small of an ID? I got some aquarium tubing for brake bleeding and got no love.
