Thanks for posting that picture. I have one of these windshield loose but it stored away at another location. The bend in the tubing means you want to be sure you don't bend the tube up by forcing to hard. Many something with a hook bend into the end and hold it tube. My 79 doesn't have a dash pad so that would be easier to use the hole above it to down it down while pushing up. I have 73/78/82 and unknown year dash pad here in town. All of them have a notch in the area that you might be able to get something in to support it. All remove the four pin that hold the cover for the wiper linkage and work from there to hold. A little lube on the outside of the tube would help it slide on easier. This is far from what I would call impossible from doing with the windshield.

Here is the steel tube I could feel. First picture shows the route of the wiper harness running across the top of the glove box and up into the windshield on the far right. Second picture was taken from below the dash looking up between the body and plate in the glove box. I could feed a tube on this without much problem. One way is attach a rod to the stretched section of tube. Use the rod to start and push the tube on. Then cut the rod in the glove box so it won't be seen. At a later date if you do remove the top later you can fold the windshield down and clean it up. Just be sure to leave extra tubing.

Thanks a million! Now I know what to feel for/look for. Now the problem will be getting my fat mitts up there.

its possible, I did mine(82) without dropping the window(hardtop has never been off) about 10 years ago, I have big mits but somehow I got back there and got the new hose on the metal tube.

My 78 fj40 also had a little check valve inline in the glove box. I believe it was to keep fluid from draining back so less pump lag time. After cleaning it for the umpteenth time I figured I'd rather have the 1/2 second lag.

I bought a '78 FJ40 new in '78 and the washer nozzle was at the top center of the windshield as described in this thread. I long ago sold this FJ and have missed it.... recently bought a new to me '78 FJ40 and the center nozzle works fine for now but needs a washer and nut on the outside of the windshield - I'm a little afraid of disconnecting it to take it on a "metric nut search" does anyone know the threads on this plastic nozzle? By the way my new '78 had a hole in the hood and since I couldn't remember how this was handled on the original '78 I just plugged the hole with a hood nozzle. Maybe I'll connect it to so I can flood the dirt from the window!

After further investigation I think the nut for the version that goes at the top of the windshield window is M14-1.00 and difficult to find based on my limited effort.

Thx Bill

Yes, I think I even tried Fastenal for a M14-no luck...............

There's a non-functional dummy nozzle that goes in the hood hole. I also considered putting a functioning version in there but I doubt my ancient pump could put out enough pressure to hit the windshield so I'd be left with the FJ40 version of a dribble cup.

I am not ready to take on the whole replace the windshield bottle, electrical, new aftermarket reservoir yet- but I do Have the motor that went on the bottom of the OEM reservoir, that the PO cracked beyond repair(still using the other side coolant overflow bottle). So, my question is as I am preparing to get seals and hardware needed to put on my hard top; what hose do I need to fit at bottom of tube that will run to where the future reservoir will be? Does it need to be clamped onto metal tube? I will be lowering the windshield to inspect that area and replacing door hinge bushings with brass ones anyway. Figured I would at least get the tubing in place before putting hardtop on-good idea?

Part number or what do I need to buy, what is everyone using?

Silcone aquarium tubing from amazon. The smaller id of the two more popular search results. No clamps needed

Thanks kruisinkid....what length would be adequate? I just want to run it into the engine area where the future reservoir will go for hookup at a later date. Also, where does it pass thru into the engine area?? Thanks again

Thanks kruisin, Where does it pass thru the firewall and into the engine bay? I assume it runs along the area above the passenger side fender towards the front?
Thanks

Correct. Open the hood and you cant miss the harness going through the firewall to the right of the blower motor, ends up just below and behind the glovebox.

great info, gents ... my washer doesn't work and I couldn't find where it connected in the windshield frame ... not that I really need it, but its one of those nagging "pita" things that will drive me nuts till its fixed ...
:bang: :smokin:

Me too winnie & thanks again Kruisin

Will post pics of my firewall, so I know what hole the tubing should go thru..................

Crazy day, will post up tomorrow....
