Attached is a close up photo of the windshield trim on my 1985 4Runner. The flat black (originally gloss black - maybe?) is peeling away and it looks like chrome underneath.

Has anyone ever repainted, powder coated or otherwise done something about this?

I have looked in the factory service manual and the procedure for removing this trim is pretty slim. It basically says remove trim (as part of the replacing windshield section).

My preferenece is to recoat it satin black but am not sure if I could powder coat it.

Suggestions? Thanks!

By the way, did a search and couldn't come up with anything.

I did a search on Yotatech and found a bunch of information on this issue. It appears that this is a common problem and there are a few different solutions. Also sounds like the "chrome" trim underneath the pealing black paint is plastic so powdercoating is probably out. Also sounds like it's an absolute bitch to remove without damage!

If anyone has recoated theirs with good luck, please let me know what you used - thanks.

I don't know about the coating, it does seem like a plastic coating instead of powdercoating. Maybe there is a film material that you stick on it?

Yes, it is a royal PITA to get off, and even harder to get it back on and stay. I would take it to a glass shop and have them remove it, then take it back and have them put it back on. The clips are very tricky and fragile, they break really easily.

I repainted the trim with regular car paint, sand and prime first. If you prep correctly it will last another 20 years.

Is it really nessicary to rermove it, though?

Couldnt you just mask the window and cab realgood with with tape and newspaper?

This is what i would do instead of hassing with R&R. Espescially since even the glass shop is bound to have somthing break.
