Is it just me or is there NO articulation in that pic???

it is not you. 80's have no front end articulation. It is mistifying to me why Toyota didn't do a 3 link. guess there weren't many rock crawlers in 1990?

Or is it because it is not an 80? :D

Dave

Leaning while squeezing between a rock and a hard place (what you cant see is the window height boulder jutting out of the tree on the low side) and on the way up and out Cadillac Hill.

One of Doug's photos showing my rig barely squeezing through the same section. Good times! :D

Real 4 wheeling I love it!

Rubicon is on my bucket list, hopefully next year.
Cool video

Same here. Been thinking about the Rubicon for 20 years. Finally getting the balls to do it next year - first have to get the 80 ready!

Well not 80 specific, but there is an 80 in front and behind!

Some action from last nights entertainment on the Whipsaw Trail, near Princeton BC

The classic log skid. Gotta love semifloat axles. I guess you already tried to keep the wheel/axle on the shaft by using a high lift jack handle across the outside of the wheel (the tube handle connected to the slider and rear bumper) to keep the axle shaft from working out of the axle housing? I have not had a chance to try either "fix" yet.

Dammit Doug, where the hell where you with that idea last night? We did comment about welding some metal across, as seen on a recent American version of Top Gear, but no welder and no metal (Hi lift never crossed our minds).

I have read about doing that but never tried it in person, who knows if it would have worked at all. I'm just armchair quarterbacking/web wheeling here.

I've done the "ratchet strap a log across the face of the tire to keep it from coming out of the housing" trick on a cherokee. I rode in the rear passenger door with a bottle of Dawn soap and kept lubing that baby up. Drove for about 5 miles...

We used my heap repair kit (2x4 and 2 ratchet straps) on my buddies tj once. Had to walk beside the jeep the whole way but at least he got out to the road. They do sell a kit for heaps that consists of a pipe with 2 sections of larger pipe on each end that can spin when the tire rotates.

Kit to get broken semifloat axle rig off trail

The basic idea. Hi lift handle or beam or piece of wood. Some lube or a pipe with a couple larger diameter pipes as rollers. This is probably easier with a leaf spring rig since you could ratchet to the leaf and keep the pipe aligned close to the center of the wheel. Most of us with full floaters are not worried about this scenario. I have seen 60's bust an axle right at the c clip.
