wow you call that soft spots!

WTF!

What happened to MUD? I was used to this being a positive and welcoming place for everybody and everything Cruiser related?
Allmost all the post besides the OP's on the first page are either sarcastic or demeaning, why?
What happened to "Congrats and welcome!"

To the OP; Congrats and welcome, your dash is (not upside down) mirrored!
I totally understand why you brought it back, you have something special there!

Tech:
Any idea what kind of flares that is?

After I clean my self up I will be able to post again! I would float that damn thing over on raft to California and drag it to the east coast with my teeth just to have it, but seriously let's get baxk to tech here guys

The spot under the window seems to be a very tough spot to patch up - are you planning to replace the door entirely or will we be seeing some true welding magic? Have you already got a donor truck?

Looking forward to the pics of your progress so far.

Door replacement would be easiest. THere is probably a lot more rust where that came from..

Sun Roof

Well I am soliciting some advise for this one. I spent about 4 hours in the garage today pulling out the sun roof. The first pic will show you why. After getting it down and disasembling it enough to get the glass off the rails I have decided that it is too far gone to put back in (pic 2). My question is: should I skin over the whole thing and forget the sun roof? should I look for an OEM replacement? should I go to a local junk yard and pull a random toyota sun roof weld it in and rig to work with my 24 volt motor or step down for a 12 volt motor. The inner frame is good and will go back up for roof support regardless.

Depends on how much you like the sun roof. I'd either get a generic replacement, or weld it over myself.

I never use the sunroofs in the cars I have. AC is a wonderful thing.

Just my opinion - sunroof is an additional point of water ingress. I'd skin it over myself and prevent the chance of leaks or future rust.

The PO told me that he built the flares himself. I dont have a donor, but there are a couple guys in the local chaper that have listed extra doors for sale so I will look into that if the doors are too far gone for me to re-skin. I started driving when I was 16 and the military sent me to japan when I was 19, I lived in japan for 5 years before coming back to the states for 3 years then I moved back to Japan for 8 years and came back to the states almost 3 years ago. The reason I share this is I have 13 years experience driving on the right side of the car and only 9 years driving on the left side of the car.

Well thats quite the project! After all that paperwork the real work will be a breeze. Those are some serious tires and fender flares that give the truck a real unique look. Make sure to have a good look behind them for more rust.

It looks from the pics that the truck may have had a quick and dirty paint job recently (hard to tell) Keep in mind there are a lot of nice Sixty shells in the states in case the rust pops up in other places unexpectedly. (remember to keep the Ambo doors if a body swap is in order!)

Look forward to seeing this project come along.

Cheers.

OKI - Ignore the thread whiners. Sure, brevity is the soul of wit, but you are on a mission and that's an awesome truck. Rust can be fixed but character is intrinsic for the truck and the man.

As for the roof, manufacturers add them to increase profit - like 3rd row seating and entertainment systems. Have/have had a bunch of vehicles with them and never use them.

Oki, my cents not that it is worth it face value(likely less) would want to keep the sun roof, just simply for the amber glass! The sunroof bracket has seemed to survive so IMHO I would remove the rust as far back as it needs to be taken, reskin the roof and cut out the size of the glass and seal, make your own mounting system and run it in stock configuration. The seal should like all sunroofs I have seen seat onto the metal and use silicon to keep the water out. Obviously prime and paint all bare metal so this doesn't happen again. Sweet truck and jealous of your RHD experience and also thank you for your service

I can look at the doors on my 60 and see if they are rusty.

...I have seen seat onto the metal and use silicon to keep the water out...

Be cautious when using silicone on metal (painted or unpainted), as 1) Silicone will trap atmospheric moisture under it in any airspaces and can foster rust, and 2) traditional silicone sealant releases acetic acid as it cures, which can in some cases erode your finish and then cause pitting and rust over time. There is a product called Silicone II that releases water or alcohol instead which may be less caustic but you'll have to research it further...
