Who cares about looks! Is there a diesel option?? (1 Viewer)

I always bug them about once a month on the diesel option:

You can too:

and their response:

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We appreciate your interest in Toyota products.
We apologize; we do not currently have any announced plans to introduce a diesel-powered vehicle in the United States. We are, however, aware of consumer interest in this type of vehicle and have documented your comments at our National Headquarters under file #200707100102.
Toyota is committed to hybrid technology. Though diesel powered engines do deliver comparable MPG ratings to hybrid vehicles, they do no bolster the environmental benefit that gasoline-electric hybrids do.
We invite you to visit our Environmental Technologies and Hybrid Technology Availability for Other Toyotas FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) to review more detailed information on these topics. We thank you for your enthusiasm about our products and hope that you will continue to consider Toyota for your driving needs.

There's the problem right there...

Please no!! The likes of Great Wall, ZX Auto and Wuling are not any better than the crap that comes out of Detroit and often worse, as hard as that may be to believe!

Are you sure about that? Not everything that comes from mainland China is crap!

Several years ago I investigated getting a China Diesel generator, it was said to be economical and rugged...

I'll agree but based on what I've seen the vehicles are nothing to write home about.

At the school where I work at in Guatemala we bought a new Wuling panel van (Wuling is a GM subsidiary based in Shanghai which is no doubt part of the problem). 1100cc 4 cylinder with a 4 speed manual. The engine AND transmission had to be completely rebuilt within 10,000km of rolling off the lot!! We demanded, and were given a replacement and, while it's still going a year later, it sounds like it's chewing itself up inside!

Based on that I WON'T be lining up to buy one!!

I just read that NISSAN is bringing in a diesel. A Maxima no less . . .

http://blogs.dieselpowermag.com/620...n-diesel-option-for-maxima-in-2010/index.html

Toyota . . .

Honda has a diesel coming too.

Which makes Nissan, Subaru and Honda all coming with diesels in the next few weeks.

Which just leaves Toyota in the dust with sticking with their stupid hybrid crap. It may give similar fuel mileage but it definatly will not have the same power/torque of a turbo diesel. Esp. when you start driving a hybrid quickly, the fuel mileage quickly diminishes, whereas I can drive my BJ all day, however I like, AC or and still get more or less the same mileage.

I was stuck in traffic for an hour a few days ago. I had to rush for a job at 110-120 which I don't like because this is where fuel consumption tarts to climb and I had several steep mountain runs as well and I still average 11l/100. With a 16 year old engine design!

When I drive leasurely like when I go to my expeditions to Maine (crossing the White Mountains in NH) I manage 10l/100 at 100kph and that's with fat tires (285/75/16).

Try that with a hybrid! Gasoline engines CANNOT be more efficient than diesel: combustion temperatures are lower, compression is lower and energy density of the fuel is lower. It's simply not possible. I'm certrain the 1HD-T could be made 15% more efficient with some minimal tuning (narrow tall tires, free-flowing exhaust, a slight pump adjustment (injection volume and timing) and an intercooler. Can't wait to see how Martin White is doing now that he replaced his OEM exhaust with 3" mandrel bent pipe and AeroTurbine muffler...

But I guess I'm sounding like a broken record again... Once converted to Diesel, especially a nice powerful one like the 1HD-T, you'll never want to go back...

That's the first I've ever heard of subaru offering a diesel, have you got any links or other information?

2010 for the diesel Maxima is not exactly "in the next few weeks" but at least their headed in the right direction!

Almost all those guys have been running diesels in europe for years. I'd be quite happy with a nissan YD22DDTi in my nissan wagon (runabout, not 4wd).
But it's subaru that have never had a diesel before. That flat four configuration means they can't just "go shopping" for a diesel like Honda and Saab used to.

A hybrid cannot touch a diesel for efficiency. The only reason for the hybrids to exist is the US EPA and their anti-dieselness. Diesel cars already beat hybrids for MPG, diesel hybrids have the potential to push the urban fuel consumption lower still.

I switched to a 14 yr old diesel benz with 207k miles and it is fun to drive once it gets moving and is delivering 30 mpg. SHould be close to 450 to 500 miles per tank of fuel.

I think Lantec might've meant "years".

I can't wait till Honda, Nissan, GM's (4.5L duramax), release their diesels in 09. I'll email them back...........Told you so! (You guys just dont listen):flipoff2:

I'm thinking about keeping my 2001 and buying a Defender 110 from Copley in Boston and sending it to ECR and having them put a Td5 in it. I know it will cost an arm and a leg, but until Yoda brings over something comparable the alternatives are pretty slim....

Drop the Isuzu 4BD1T into it if the regs will allow you.
Was factory fitment in Aussie a decade or so back.

Just wondering if any mud member work or have a relible contact in US Toyota Motor .. ?

Just to know which it's the line for coming models ..

Okay, I've decided to de-lurk and finally chime in...

Dougal -- here's a link describing the Subaru Diesel:

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/03/07/geneva-motor-show-subaru-diesel-boxer-engine/

It was also mentioned in this month's Subaru owners' fluff magazine. N.b. they have only announced a European release and are merely considering whether to bring it to N. America.

I was seriously shopping for my first LC last year, either an FJ80 or early FJ100...but I just couldn't stomach the mileage of the gasser engine for the kind of driving I do. I keep holding out hope that Toyota will bring a Diesel LC or 4runner to the States. I'd be at the front of the line -- especially if it could run on bio-diesel. (okay, time to wake up from my dream now)

Audi just announced the q7 tdi for mid 2008 release in the USA. Come on Toyota do not make me buy an audi or a benz for my family hauler. Come on, you can do it.
