great work.

i am curious about the purpose of such a huge stinger on the bumper. it looks long enough to put serious leverage on the frame if you nose in hard. why do you need it?

I think that the long stingers are for preventing a nose over if you are coming down a long steep grade. I have seen them at comps save a rig from going end over after coming off of a steep drop. I like the stingers myself and would like to incorporate one into a bumper for my 1990 pickup someday.

On a quick drop and climbs like you mention, I agree that you would scoop a little with it.

Walking Eagle, the rig looks good. Makes me want to get off my duff and wrench on my own junk. Can't wait to see some action shots.

but when is it useful or safer to have one so long? it appears to me to be counterproductive if you are switching from a steep decline to steep climb rapidly. in that context it's a shovel.

on old logging roads here you must nose into and out of narrow v shaped cross trenches created by the removal of culverts. i have buried the arb on my truck many times without issues. i think if i had that stinger i would be digging my way to australia each time.

And you'l be digging that ARB alot quicker and alot harder than I will with this bumper. The ARB sticks out further in front of the frame and has that real useful vetical front surface that works like a plow. The stinger is at a steep enough angle that if it ever became a shovel going from steep decent to accent, that would be the least of my worries. I've wheelled this truck pretty hard and have never gotton into a situation where the stinger has prevented me from doing anything.

It looks big cause it's on a big truck w/ big lights on it. The lights disapear after you've been driving it a few months.

Having the stinger was debated by lots of people when I had Frankie build the bumper. Since then there have been alot of other 80's with stinger bumpers - at the time tube bumpers on 80's were few and far between.

Funny re-reading that thread - lot of flack about the lights back then too and how I'd hate them. I ended up really liking them there.

Really, I don't understand why everyone thinks this stinger is so huge, I mean, it's not much taller than this

Seatbelt parts leave this afternoon. UPS was closed here on friday or they woulda left then. Youre gonna love the cloth seats. They are WAY more comfortable than the leather seats.

thanks, i have zero stinger experience except for much shorter ones on minitrucks
so i was interested in the logic behind yours. the steep descent explanation makes sense.

Last weekend pulled the hatch, and the rear window out of the hatch - sanded and painted hatch, cleaned up rear window (mineral spirits, a pressurewasher and a brush), put the hatch back on Sunday night cause thought it might rain or snow. Monday night threw the seat belts in for fear I'd have to drive it this week, and I'll tell ya', there is no way the mini-van is driving through this crap we have in Oklahoma right now!

Quite the snowstorm, wasn't it? How much did OK end up with? We had about 17.5" here in mid-Missouri when it was all said and done.

21" In less than 24 hours

it's looking pretty good. I pretty much consider all the fire fixes done. Only two things effected that haven't been fixed are the dome light and the rear wiper. The interior is nicer than when I bought it 6 years ago w/ 162K on it.

Today I'm finishing up PS front fender work - details after opening it up 1.5". I have two new PS doors sitting waiting for paint cause I dented them last time I was out.

Course, I've done all this work just to decide to sell it.

Haven't gotten much action on it, not that I've been trying real hard, so it'll probably find it's way onto ebay next month - after I get the doors and such painted.

Why you selling it? I keep seeing your add and I know you've done so much work on it...

Well, life circumstances change. I thought I was happy w/ the '98 passat I got, which it's a great car for me, especially w/ only 36K miles, 30+mpg ect - but it's kinda cramped when I haul the kiddos, which I'm doing more of lately in this car. It wouldn't be so bad but the damn car seats push the kids up 3-4". So on a day to day bassis that irritates me.

And I sorta got depressed after going out for the Big Meat Run. The truck did great, but I slipped on a loose rock hill climb and dented two doors, which I'm replacing, and I blew up a birfield - which I think was damaged in the bent housing I pulled it out of - so no biggie, I had another. But I found the whole thing rather depressing - do all kinds of prep work to go, then come home with a laundry list of fixes.

I hate to comletely get rid of having a big 4x4 though - we've been pretty consistant lately on getting at least one major storm here that shuts everything down.

So, I'm thinking 1st generation 4-Runner. I almost did that when this truck burnt up, but the interior and Passat fell in my lap, so that seemed the thing to do. 1st gen 4 runner wasn't previously much of an option cause the kids and their car seats. Now they're big enough they can buckel themselves in, so I wouldn't be straining to get back there. I'd also like to go back to something simplier to work on engine wise. And 20mpg on a mild 4 runner (33's) seems pretty reasonable as an only vehicle - sorta splitting the difference between my LX and the Passat. And for some reason a 4 cyl and a 5 spd just feels right to me at this point in life.

We'll see. I'm not deperate to sell it yet, which is why I've put what I think is a reasonable price on it rather than a sell it this instant price. It's a unique vehicle and it'll take a while to find a unique owner. Once it's all painted (hopefully by next month) - it'll either make me fall in love with it again, or make it easier to sell on e-bay.

It is after all, even with all the work into it, just a truck. And even if it is more than a truck, it doesn't mean I have to be rational about it :)

Just keep what you have, and what you know, and don't hardcore four wheel it. Use it like you would use the 4Runner. You'll be happier, and have a more reliable vehicle that you know inside and out. It's the playing that breaks your stuff. It sounds like you're tired of playing.

x2 - I think you will find the 4runner is smaller than you expect unless you are small. I had a 1st gen 4runner on 31's before I bought my last 80 and the thing couldn't get out of it's own way. It blew a headgasket on the interstate at just over 200k.

I do understand the desire to have something simpler to work on, that is one of the main reasons I sold my 97 and bought the 92.

I've got a 94 that is in nice shape. Runs but needs HG replaced. LOTS of aftermarket parts and clean TX title....All electrics and A/C and Heat both work better than normal.

Cheers,
Mike

Thinking first gen not 2nd gen - and does me no good while I still have this one. Thanks anyway.

Funny thing Atticus - the dents on the doors were not from what I would call playing. It was what I thought was an easy climb, and it would have been if the rocks weren't loose. Just one of those things. Maybe it's just bad judgement I'm tired of :) Or maybe I'm just tired of always being the leader on trail rides - need to do a better job of claiming ignorance of the trails so I can let someone else find these loose rocks first.

I understand both of ya'alls point. My brother has told me to never sell it. My son, 4 when the fire happened, was quite upset at the time of the prospect of daddy selling his truck. But as I said - life circumstances change (and I won't go into it more than that) - and the practicality of keeping only the 12mpg monster isn't all that apealing or practical, and the idea of keeping only the Passat isn't apealing either (if kiddo was out of car seat it would help).... Keeping both is looking less and less like an option.

Though if I can't get a reasonable price for the truck in the next couple months, I may be forced to sell the Passat and keep the truck - cause I'm not letting it go for nothing. The Passat should be much easier to flip. We'll see, maybe I'll start driving the truck more once I get the fender back on and see just how pricey $4.00 / gallon is with my driving habits - but on paper it looks like an extra $2500 a year in gas to have it as an only vehicle.

As you say circumstances change, but I'd like to hope we won't lose you from MUD. Its guys like you that make this 80s place the place it is.
Good luck on whatever you decide.

But my 2c is...
:steer: keep the truck:bounce:

thanks for the kind words!

keep the truck. I have both. 4 runners are great for bashing through the woods and everything, but it's nothing like an 80. The 80s ability to carry lots of weight, gear, kids, friends, dogs, or whatever and still comfortably wheel most anything is unmatched. 4 runners are lightweights and should be treated accordingly. Just buy a 4 runner and add to the fleet.
