That is the compressor side, the exhaust will be the 0.64.

ya I saw it .. I just thought that big AR worth for a big boost application ..

That's some interesting reading.. according to that write-up the AR size on the compressor side really has little effect.. what difference does it make then? Larger versus smaller?

Very little. I'm not aware of any turbos which offer a choice of compressor cover A/R.
It's matching the A/R to the wheel within to get the best from it.

Generally larger A/R compressors are more suited to low boost, smaller A/R compressors more suited to high boost. But the 2H is a motor not suited to high boost so that turbo will likely work well.

Mmm dunno? I asked the guy selling the Turbo for a couple pics today and this AR .80 stamp on the side worries me...

What is your worry? That's the cold side.

It is the hot side that is far more important.

0.64 is not that big

I've been doing a bit more searching for a suitable turbo for the 2H and have come across a Garrett T3 for pretty cheap... any advice on whether this might work? Thanks guys

Safari, used the Garrett T3 turbo in their Safari turbo kit for the 2H.
This kit is no longer in production however they still do turbo kits for later model Cruisers. My opinion they do the best kit although most expensive. I have posted pictures previous. Regards

Picture has got me thinking. That's probably a ball bearing turbo off a nissan SR20DET. Does the turbine side have 4 bolts or 6 holding it on?

Excellent turbo for your application, stop worrying and get on with it. I know a guy who uses the same turbo on a 3.9L Isuzu diesel.

It's the other side of the turbine housing that will have 4 or 6 bolts through clamp plates to hold it to the core.

6 bolts is a ball bearing core, 4 bolts is a journal bearing core. Journal is good, ball bearing is a bonus.

If this Garrett Turbo is a current model which i think it is. Both BB turbos but it is either a GT2554R PN#471171-3 or a GT2854R PN# 780371-1 just by looking at Garretts Turbo comparison chart. The only way to know which one.... he has send you a pic of the tag or he can just tell you the numbers. part#'s are on the tag and riveted to the Centre Housing. My only advice i can give you is thoroughly inspect the housing on both compressor side and turbine side for housing contact from the wheels. If there are marks from the wheels.....you better get it real cheap. The only thing that BB turbo is good for is Garrett accepting it for there Ball bearing Centre Housing Rotating Assembly exchange program. You send them the core.....they send you a brand new one for 1/2 the cost of a new CHRA. How do I know this? I just did that 2 weeks ago and it cost me $500 for my GT28.

That's good to know. I have a T2860R at home with a rooted core which would be great for core exchange.
That particular turbo of mine has a tag number that matches nothing.

Also......all BB turbos have axial and radial play. Keep in mind, when you check it there is no oil in it (which will take up .002-.003 of play radially) and if it has alot of axial play. Thats not good either. My old turbo housing. I set-up a mag base and dial indicators (recently professionally calibrated) on a steel bench w/ the turbo housing bolted down. Radially I had .014 Dry and .012 w/oil pumped into housing and .004 axial play. New turbo... .008 radial and .0015-.002 axial play using same method and instruments. My comp/turbine wheels werent touching but were DAMN close!!! To have a fresh start i just sent it in and bit the bullet.

The core you have at home of the T2860 doesnt match anything on Garretts turbo listing? T series turbos are older..There fore not listed in Garretts current porduct line-up. I think thats why you dont see it. I would think it would still be able eligible for their exchange program...? Maybe not? I think you will have to contact a Garrett Performance Distributer of your choice to find out.

I used D&W Diesel in Auburn NY. and Rick Banas was the gentlemen i dealt with. Awesome customer service and a pleasure to deal with.

I forgot to mention....from the minute i sent it off to D&W. I had a new Garrett box with CHRA, new turbine inlet gasket and oil drain gasket in 3days. Thats only because he couldnt get a hold of me to ask if i wanted it AIR Shipped or Ground mailed or else it would have been 2 days!

The T2860R isn't the offical designation, it's more the best way I have to describe it. It's the ball bearing (not roller bearing) turbo fitted to a Nissan S14 silva with the Sr20. 60mm compressor wheel.
I do have the serial number somewhere and it doesn't quite match any of the turbomaster etc lists.

Coming together pretty well.. just found a used exhaust manifold for $45 so I can get adapter made up and pyro put in without having to park the truck.. The turbo is coming in at $145 so pretty thrifty so far.. Once I get everything I'll start a separate thread up as I'll be needing a bit of guidance from knowledgable guys like you dudes..
