Which Turbo for 2H?

Thanks for all the advice guys.. I am waiting on the T28 that I've bought with the .64 exhaust AR and .80 compressor AR. I have in the mean time seen a Toyota CT26 that came off a Supra advertised and I just wanted to see what your opinion is on the compatability of the CT26 to the 2H? I have no specs on the CT26 offered, I do know that it came off a Supra originally and I think that they had different spec to the ones fitted to the 4.2 diesel Toyotas. I want to get the best turbo I can for this mod and would hate to let a good opportunity pass by.. thanks for your help once again.. much appreciated

The supra turbo is even bigger than the CT26 used on the 4.2's. Not a good match.

looking forward on that .. very interested to see how that perform in your 2H ..

Hopefully coming up soon Tapage..;) Did some more research yesterday and I think I'm right in saying that the T28 has the same 4 bolt exhaust flange as the new generation GT Garretts with the roller bearings so if I need to upgrade at some stage it should be a pretty simple procedure.... Anyways Turbo arrives today and the manifold should come next week, still need to organise a pyro, some piping etc but shouldn't take too long. Will keep you guys posted 4sure...

Resurrecting this thread to tap the turbo-smart folks- is a Garrett T3 with a compressor A/R of .61 and Turbine side A/R of .47 appropriate for the 2H? I have read and read through the turbo threads and this seems (if I am right in this, I know nothing of turbos) like a turbo with the A/R numbers reversed for what is appropriate for the 2H. I am trying to cobble together a home-built turbo as I am unfortunately too broke to go the kit route. I am counting on leaning on the MUD knowledge base to guide me through....
Thanks!
Jeff

Should work, what is the turbo from?

Not sure Dougal, it is an overstock web deal, I'll PM you- I don't want it sold out from under me as unlikely as that may be. I am looking forward to the turbo (I suffer up in the Sierras) but don't know any more than the basics. I am not concerned that it is beyond my skill level (once certified welder w/ access to water jet cutter & machining for mani) just my experience/ knowledge. I may have more questions for you if you don't mind. I am shooting for a practical install that is long on reliability and short on theory I guess. After I do it I'll post a thread for the others that are good at following instructions but lack theoretical knowledge.

To that end have you any recommendations for a reliable exhaust gas sensor/ gauge? I am likely to undertake a simple install with merely oil cooling, no fuel aneroid, and exhaust & boost gauges. I don't want to run a high boost- just enough to keep me in 4th or 5th on hills and out of 3rd at altitude. I'm guessing in the 8-10 range. This is a journal bearing unit and although I've recently rebuilt the top end (and a bit of the bottom) I'd like this to be a mod geared towards conservatism than hot rodism (not that I could with the HJ!).

Thanks for your advice!
Jeff

PS: Found a compressor .5/ turbine .63 T3/T4 unit since previous post. PM'd

I've got your PM links. The Hino turbo will work fine, but you'll want to swap the wastegate actuator for one that opens earlier. The stock one can probably be sold for more than another one will cost.

The chinese T3's with the 0.63 A/R hot side are getting big for this application. They're targetted towards ricers after high rpm power (i.e. dyno queens).

Any good brand pyro will be fine. They all use industrial K type thermocouples which are interchangable, so just pick the gauge that suits your taste. I have VDO.

Thanks Tapange & Dougal. I'll move on the Hino and check out the ISSPRO guages. This is a big help, I hope to have the turbo done by the end of January. Sooner if I can juggle schedules and the rain lets up here- In the middle of the city I am working outside! Seems wrong when there isn't a shade tree for me to work under.... Waste gate operation seems best at 11psi for the 2H from what I've read- seem right?

The internet is awesome, to be picking the brains of a Panamanian and a Kiwi, I haven't been to Panamá but am hoping to; spent a month camping and surfing out of cheap van on the North Island winter of '08. It was a great experience and I can't wait to go back.

Thanks again

Since 2H was never turboed from Factory right boost it's hard to tell .. I boost mine from 8 PSI to 20 PSI and I'm in 14PSI now .. happy .. but the IDI still a disadvantage over DI engines ...

I'll likely look for a wastegate that will open at a 12- 14 psi range and keep the boost around 10, conservative!

Thanks for all your help guys and Happy New Year!
Jeff

I'd keep it under 10, as well as the engine holding together, you've got cooling to consider. More power means more waste heat.

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would ask my question here. This will be going on a 2H HJ60 (auto if that matters....not stock).

I picked up a new in the bag T3 60 trim (Master Power)with a Compressor cover AR of .42 (inducer measures 60mm) and a turbine AR of .48 (wheel measures 49.5mm exducer 63mm inducer).

Any ideas how this would work out on a 2H in the 8-12psi range?

Just trying to make a simple (cheap)setup that is a nice power boost and nothing crazy.

Well tune the fuel with the EGT gauge, aiming for 1100f at 12psi ish should be safe?

super safe .. I'm with bunch of diesel and 14 PSI ...

So I have been searching around and I finally got a line on a used GT2560R. Are all of them the same? I have seen a picture of it a/r on the compressor housing is .60 and says M24 just want to make sure it's the right one!

guy said it is a from a JDM S14 SR20DET T28 Ball Bearing Turbo??

From what I have read this turbo is an excellent match and will provide me with more low end boost than the GT2860R correct??

Matt
