Exhausted my search in previous threads without a clear answer.

3/72 FJ40 valve cover...

TOYOTA IMPROVED COMBUSTION SYSTEM. SOR says "RH side of the valve cover toward firewall", is that the Passenger side?

MEASUREMENT OF ENGINE ADJUSTMENT. SOR says "Passenger side rear of valve cover", is that on the valve cover or the firewall?

Please advise.

It is my understanding that RH side means when sitting in the drivers seat so YES, I would say the passenger side. I also think you are correct about your second question in that they are referring to the firewall. Don't take my word as gospel just my understanding. I can tell you that when I got my 12/72 truck, the first sticker you show was on the top of the valve cover to towards the back. In the photo I posted you can see it as a light spot near the coil on top of the valve cover. Good Luck, If the valve cover is any indication looks like you have done a great job on your truck. Post up some more photos when you have a chance.

pretty sure the measure of adjustment one goes on top of the valve cover back towards the firewall. while the improved combustion sticker goes on the underside of the hood, again back towards the firewall end.

Unless it's a RHD in which case it would be on the other side.

Just kidding.......

I can tell you definitively that the Improved Combustion sticker came attached to the under side of the hood, passenger side, on my 3/72 FJ40, not on the engine. I don't recall the other sticker ever being on my engine and now 43 years later, there is no evidence of its placement if it was ever there. Wish I'd taken more engine bay shots back in the day but who'd have thought I, or anybody else, would ever care about that.

Here's a Mud thread that talks about these decals. Zags photo (post #2) shows the orientation of the "Measurement" decal, and Shane comments (post #10) on the location of the "Improved" decal, "The improved was on the passenger side valve cover on the rear section between the stampings."

There is also a Pirate thread that talks about the "Measurement" decal. Apparently there are 2 versions of this decal (post #54), the early one includes the "Specific Gravity" line, the later one does not. The early version is listed on metrictlc as 58-67, does not appear the later version is available.

Thanks wscbill, I found that post as well. I am still skeptical as to the placement.

Spector Off Road instructs placement of the "Improved" decal on the rear pass side valve cover.
And placement of the "measurement" decal on "rear of valve cover" but not on it...

I need to find a picture of an original placement. All I have found are pictures of restorations and their interpretation.

Spectors word is not law by a long shot. Sales brochures of the time have a cartoon cutaway drawing that shows a sticker on the backside of the valve cover, but doesn't show which it is.

Thanks you guys. But The jury is still out.
Two of you show this one in different locations, neither of which are where SOR says it goes. (RH side valve cover)

SOR instructs placement of this one under the hood.

Nice Job, Mine will not be OEM when it is done but really enjoy seeing the ones like you have that are. Great looking LandCruiser for sure.

I don't have a 72 brochure, but the 71 and 73 show it in the same place.
Pic is from the 71 brochure.
