where is it leaking water this time.......

i'm trying to keep in mind that the truck is over 15 years old. 15 years of heat/cold/ice/wind/rain..... and plenty of time for rubber seals to dry, crack and rot away.

However, it is still a major PITA!!!

I have found out that my windshield is in fact leaking also. So add that to the list. Not sure i have a single weather seal on my truck that does not leak water. :-(

I need to: re-seal the windshield, new felt window guides at all 4 windows, new seals for the sliding glass and new seal for the rear hatch glass. That hasn't even taken care of the sunroof yet......

My sig has a cheap solution for a leaky windshield seal. Its still leak free after a winters worth of cold and rain.

I feel ya.

I thought I had all my leaks fixed. Walked out to the lc thursday, get in and smell "that" smell. Notice my pass floor board is soaked and the drivers side rear door is leaking (seems like its running down the lower grab handle?).

EXTREMELY frustrating.

I was all happy after having, I hope, the rear cargo window vent leak fixed, when the other day I pull into a parking lot and drip drip drip on my hand.

Water was leaking from the seam right above the grab handle on the a pillar. Today I checked my sunroof drains, and they work fine, but while I was up there I noticed the beginnings of many small rust bubbles along the top edge of the roof/windshield glass molding.

This would most likely explain my soggy wet driver and passenger side floor boards I just finished drying out.

I really love my 80 series, but am looking forward to the time when I can legally import an hdj100 and swap my 45 cab onto my hdj81. It's so frustrating, yes I know it's 20 years old, but for a 'flagship' model to have so many of these stupid little annoying water leaks.

I just hope the 100's don't have the same problems.

for what its worth i had cut my rear window rubber runners on one of my 80s ,on the advice of a glazier buddy ,but i cut it a little to short and water would drip drain onto my speaker.so maybe someone has backyard butchered your runners to short too.you have blown air back through your sunroof drains,i have had that happen a few times worked for me and i have been driveing these rigs for years in the wettest part of vancouver bc.lynn valley liquid sunshine.

i replaced the sunroof glass on my cruiser. it hasn't leaked since. I would also get the drip from the grab handles, but only under a heavy rain or a trip through the car wash. A light rain or melting snow wouldn't cause it to leak so my guess is that the rubber seal on the glass was worn away enough to allow too much water past and overwhelm the drains. When I installed the new glass, I had to shim it up a little further so that the seal was flush with the top of the roof. Before I did this, the glass sat below the roof line about 1/16 of an inch. Some washers moved it up to bring the new glass lever with the roof. Not a difficult job - took me about an hour and I sourced the glass from cdan. It was close to $400 delivered, but the nice dry interior was worth it to me.

So now the battle is a wet passengers REAR floor carpet, mostly on the right side (US passenger side), close to the door.
All the door drains are clear, I have long ago pulled the plugs from the rocker panels, sunroof drains fine.

The left side rear passenger door always has the lower carpeted section of the door panel soaking wet as well, but the floor doesn't seem to get as wet as the right side. Whereas the left side door doesn't seem to exhibit the same soggy door panel carpet.

So back to the title of the original post, where is it coming from this time?

I have fixed the cargo area leaks, so I'm pretty sure it's not coming from back there.

Ouch:eek:

I thought they were around $285 a few years back. I had my leak fixed for a while, but the sunroof is leaking again. It is time to just replace the glass/seal.

I'm guessing shipping pushed it close to $400?

I bought my LX450 about 6 weeks ago after asking the p.o. about any leaks. He said "none". I say BS! Luckily, he just had the front windshield replaced and used a reputable multi-location glass shop. They did NOT use adhesive between the glass and gasket, but did between gasket and body. It is leaking between the glass and gasket. I will phone the closest shop again today and see if they honor their warranty and re-do the job... Oh, and yes, the rear slider leaks on the d-side too.

If they don't, look at the"How To" in my sig.

Well, I too keep playing the "where is it leaking game".

Finally have the rear DS vent fixed with no leaks, but still have some sort of minor leak in the front DS side, which adds water to the channel along the doors.

True PITA as dousing with a hose does not seem to produce any results, yet leaving the rig out overnight in the rain = wet channel. I can't see any water coming in from the corner of the windshield, nor does there appear to be any leaks coming down the A-Pillar anymore (fixed the Sunroof leak).

Need to be in the truck for a few hours when it is raining and watch everything.

The final kicker was that the rig did not want to start after going to town on Saturday, so wondering if some of the water in the DS kick-panel screwed up the solenoids/alarm cut-out. It eventually started, but had the classic turn-the-key but no turn of the starter (nor click of the plunger). Debugging that one in a different thread.

The search goes on....will likely sort by summer, ugh.

I must admit this is really weird, but since i have been overhauling my motor (going on 8 months now and still going..) my truck has sat in the driveway and hasn't moved. We have had snow, ice, sleet, freezing rain and torrential downpours and my truck is dry! I have no clue why, but i have felt the floorboards and there is no wet carpet at all!! What the heck! Wonder if the leaking is coming from driving and water being forced in somewhere?

I just solved my windshield leak.
Now I found a leak by the rear sliders.
How do fix my leaky rear sliders?
Thanks

:hhmm: good point!

Earlier in the week I was driving through as many deep puddles that I could find with my son in the rig (father-son bonding time). None were over a foot deep, but I was hitting plenty of them at speed, and the roads were like rivers at many places. No rain coming down from above, just splashing from below. I may need to run another test driving the truck this week through as much water as possible and see if the leaks then "appear".

Kidglove, here is a good thread on the rear leak...I assume your storage/jack area is getting wet (carpet too).

https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/250940-water-leak-2.html

I ended fixing the trim under the window with silicone, the vent itself with silicone, and had to replace the outside louver as it always breaks when removing from the truck as the clips are stronger than the vent itself.

 and good luck.

A few months ago I got into my truck after it had been sitting out all day in a heavy downpour. The first time I hit the brakes I could hear something sloshing around. Nothing inside was wet including the headliner or the carpets. I was all set to take apart the headliner on the weekend, and the next day the sloshing noise was gone never to return. Has this happened to anyone else?

Sounds like the rocker panels, which have the sunroof drains terminating in them. There are tiny drain slots in them that can get clogged. If water gets in and can't get out, it will give you quite a sloshing sound, but once it stops raining, it might have time to drip out and then you won't hear the sloshing until the next deluge.

You can clear the drain slots by reaming them with the end of a stiff zip tie. There are also plastic drain plugs in the bottom of the rockers that you can just remove, either temporarily or permanently. Just be careful you aren't directly underneath when you clear the drains or pull the plugs, or you will get wet. ;)

Thanks Steve.
No wet carpets yet but the jack was all wet and is starting to rust
The plastic vents are so brittle I already broke and fixed one redneck style
These damn 16 year old trucks, wouldn't have it any other way:hillbilly:

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out on the weekend. I had no idea the sunroof drains terminated in the rockers.
