Sitting in the cruiser ( 2007) last night trying to work out where to mount the CB doesn't look like there is to many places to put it before I install it have you guys got any suggestions. great to see some photos of locations you guys come up with or maybe it would be easier with a handheld

I'm going with a handheld with a permanent antenna for the reasons you mentioned. There doesn't seem to be a great place to permanently mount one.

I was thinking the same thing about the centre console there is enough room in there for the lid to close

I have the Uniden UH7760 with all controls on the mic.
The radio itself is mounted in the centre console next to the automatic gear stick.

This is what I use. I can take it out of the car for a hike if necessary or out of the car when I'm not off roading. I used this a lot on my last expo rig. I had a fixed antenna on that rig and have yet to mount one on my Hundy. As you guessed, I keep the box for storage.

As others have said, go with a handheld and a Firestick. Your money is better spent on an SNR meter and tuning your antenna. All legal CBs are limited to 4W anyway, so whether you go with a handheld or console doesn't really matter. The antenna and how well it is tuned to your cable/radio is far more important.

You'll end up having to pick either the lower, middle or upper third channels and tune/optimize for a group of those. Pick the middle third so it doesn't totally suck on one end or the other.

This is the setup I have with the Midland handheld for backup when people in a group are scattered between CB and 2m/470cm ham radios. Works about as well as CB can be expected to.

That's the same one I use. Took me forever to realize why I was having so many issues with transmissions; then I figured out the transmit power was set to "low" for battery conservation when outside of the truck. I'll be interested to see how it works out with a fixed antenna when I slap one on next month.

I have the radio shack version of that radio, I use a mag mount Wilson antenna and stick the CB kind of under the dash to the left of the steering column with 3M command strips, the hook and loop variety. I use a lighter adapter for power, the whole unit can be installed or removed in a few minutes.

IMHO the only thing that sucks worse than a mobile CB unit is a hand held CB. Really kind of a waste of time as far as I'm concerned.

As someone else already stated, max transmittal is capped at 4w, and handhelds generally all can be easily incorporated into hardwired antenna systems (which are the only thing that really make a difference). Unless you really just like having the extra cab space wasted, and the inability to use your radio outside of the vehicle, I don't really see the point in getting a traditional mobile CB radio, save for maybe a couple extra features. Just my thoughts.

CBs are a waste of time in general unless you care to hear inane trucker chatter and I won't spare cockpit real estate on it. A handheld does all I require of it and lives rattling around in the console until it's needed. Luckily it seldom is, so inexpensive is the operative word. Also you can hop out and spot someone and not need to be in their line of sight (i.e. direction of travel towards you) for hand signals.

Really FRS/GMRS radios are just about as useful in small tight groups. Unless you're spread out over miles to keep dust out of your teeth, then CB is marginally better. And you can play bucket brigade to "talk" to the lead if you're somewhere in the back.

A 50W 2m or dual-band radio is a much better investment given the additonal fact that you at least have a chance of hitting a repeater and getting an SOS out in an emergency.

CB radios.... you guys are so cute.

They are a total waste of time. As Staggrlee mentioned a 2m/70cm is a much better investment. There is nothing to be scared of testing for the license. It's super easy. The performance is so superior to CB radio it's not even funny.

If you have to have one I suppose the Cobra XT all-in-one for mobile or the Midland for hybrid. Lets get serious... for what Anthony spent on his cool shift knobs he could of had a HH Ham radio.

Ouch!

Here is me being honest. I would gladly drop the coin on a 2M HAM setup, no reservations at all. For me it has nothing to do with money. However my friends are not so financially lucky and for them the cost of CB is very attractive. I have a CB because it's all they have. In the 2.5 years I've owned and wheeled the 100 there has been only one group trip I've been on with others that had 2M HAM onboard. In all cases they had CB.

So, I completely disagree CB is worthless.

I was just teasing you. I love ya man.

There are dual band hh hams for about 60 bucks. That's less than the cobra. All it took to get my friends on board was me letting one use a (hh) during a trip. I find that 9 out of 10 ppl I talk to don't realize amateur is an option.

CB isn't worthless but at that level I would use FRS.
