Where Has Your 80 Taken You?: 80 Series Camping/Overland/Adventure Thread

My friend and I had planned a trip into the GCBC (Grand Canyon backcountry) to explore an area/trail that has been on my list for a long time. Well my buddy bailed out on me and I was just to excited so I went all by myself. The trail wasn't that difficult and I only had to lock my hubs once (part timer). But when you are more than 90 miles from pavement, cell phone service, any kind of help, and you might go weeks without seeing another soul on the road, even an easy trail gets the pucker factor up there.

If I break down or got stuck would it be smarter to try and walk the 20 miles out on the road I drove in on in order to get back to the main remote dirt road? Or would I be better off trying to hike 5 - 10 miles down to the Colorado river where I could access water and hopefully flag down a river rafter in the middle of winter?

These are the kinds of thoughts I found myself thinking on today's trip..... But hey, that's why I drive an 80 series   :smokin:

It actually turned out to be an amazing day. I left home at 6am and got back at 9pm and the gas light didn't turn on until I was pulling into the driveway. With no break downs or injuries (excluding an agave to the knee) it was a perfect day with temps in the mid 50's and no wind.

The views were endless and amazing, sometimes it is easy to get stressed out or down on life, but when I get to do trips like this I realize that I am so lucky to have these kinds of areas in my backyard.

More pics, count the mule deer

This area was originally settled by the Bundy family (the ones that got famous a few years back in the standoff with the BLM.) I am pretty sure these are some old Bundy initials because they still run cattle in the area.

With such a backyard, do you not run a spot or Garmin satellite device?

Nah, I do always make sure to let someone know exactly where I will be and when I should be back so they can get help if I don't make it back. I also always take my map and compass along with my GPS, extra food and water, tools, a level 1 trama kit, extra bedding, knife, axe, saw, shovel, firearms, and extra clothes.

I am a big believer in self reliance, but as I get older I do find myself getting more and more tempted to pick up a spot or something similar. If I was doing technical climbing with ropes and heading deep into the canyons I think I would make the commitment and get the spot, but I am also afraid it wouldnt work in some of the canyons around here, normal GPS's never work in the slots so I am not sure if the spot would.

I am so grateful to live in America where we believe in public land use. I am so lucky to have thousands of miles of beautiful remote country to explore. This is why I drive an 80 series. This last year I have been focusing on exploring all the different back country routes into the the Grand Canyon. I was able to find a really cool jeep trail with access to views of the river and some beautiful areas to camp. This weekend I took a good friend out and we had an awesome time driving, camping, and hiking.

The Grand Canyon is full of huge open remote country that will make you feel insignificant and it is hard to put the camera down....... I think I need a drone.

get one that does the work for you! Been tempted but hard to swallow the cost for a 20min film cap.

I am putting it on my list. This last trip to the Grand Canyon convinced me. I figure it would be worth buying a nice one. I would hate to fly a cheaper drone over the edge of the Grand Canyon and have it fail......

Went camping with @bcomnes

We decided to check out the Delamar mtn's in NV. There is a ghost town/abandoned mine here called Delamar, aka widowmaker.

After exploring the abandoned mines and stuff we decided to head deeper into the range to find a place to camp for the night.

Found a camp spot and the next day we finished driving over the range and down into rainbow canyon where we followed the train tracks up the scenic canyon to get back to Caliente NV.
