The block is back from the machine shop and at the mechanic shop now, but not the head yet. I'll have your questions answered soon. I am really impressed with all of the interest and suggestions from everyone. I'll keep you all posted shortly after i know. Thanks!!!

I have confirmed from a couple of different websites that the motor is a Chevy 2

Awesome. Your model is 'Chevy 2?' It is also known as, 'Nova,' for the later years. My mother had a '68 Nova and it was one of the first cars that I worked on. I believe that you have a cast iron intake manifold. Toyota manifolds that are not cracked are harder to find than Fs or 2Fs, in my searches.

I'd totally go with a GM 250 in my rig if I didn't have a couple of Toyota drivetrains laying around. They come up all the time on Craigslist. There seems to be a robust aftermarket for them. People ignore their ability because the V8 has an even greater appeal. But, for me, a 250 straight 6 is the primary non-Toyota option that I would run in a rig.

How many gears does your transmission have? A Muncie 420 465 are native to that motor / clutch when used in GM trucks.

You might need to look into high-elevation carburetor options, or electronic fuel injection, for the good performance wheeling in your region.

I know the Chevy ll pretty well. They were really popular when i graduated high school in 1968. Do you feel fairly certain that's what this motor came out of? From what I've found on the Internet they were used in a wide range of vehicles including Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Olsmobile as well as trucks. Thanks for the info. Oh, my FJ40 is a three speed on the floor.

I did some searching and found
F=Flint, 11=Nov, 26-day, CBJ-1972 250/powerglide.
