Here you go Tom the perfect first car. http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/ctd/3326755071.html

Just kidding and no I wasn’t looking for one of those I saw it on the daily mailing on BAT. http://bringatrailer.com/2012/10/18/1982-renault-le-car/

My oldest is fifteen now and I already told here that she is going to be driving my 4runner. My concern is more ABS and lack there of on my 4runner. I have no issues with it but she will when it gets bad out. So I also informed her that I hopefully will be getting a diesel truck and she can drive that when weather is bad. She doesn’t look as happy as me but she is a good sport about it.

About the 80, have the dealer take a photo of the dash and send it to you if you want lockers. Don’t waist time explaining it to him or driving an hour. The 80 is a good choice if you are not concerned with MPG. The 100 is a good choice maybe with the newer 5 speed but check the differences and upgrades though the years with this. http://www.sleeoffroad.com/newbie/newbieUZJ100.htm

Bad trans. Perfect for a kid.

Id do that in a heart beat if its just a trany.

Thanks Scott
To compare the price of a 4rnr and 80 it seems that if you take the same year and same mileage of the 2 vehicles that the 4rnr could be half the price of the 80 or at least $2K - $3K less than the 80.
Does that seem to be a somewhat accurate statement?
If that is the case I would lean towards the 4rnr.

Dont even look at a pre 96 4runner. In fact id look 98 and up, maybe some 97s...

Thanks Gin.
Got my eye on a cherry '98 Limited 4rnr w 148k.
The lady thinks she wants to sell it cuz it's an extra vehicle.

You don't want an 80 for yourself. You want a 1964 FJ45LV with a 97 drive train.

I know a guy who could hook you right up.

Not within my budget.

I honestly cant come up with one reason to get an 80 over a 3rd gen....

As far as a kid vehicle goes, I'm realizing that for sure. Basically saving a couple grand or more going that direction. My kid doesn't need that extra size and a third seat like I do.

I think the 62 would be a sweet ride, and just give the kid your van that already has the mattress installed.

As far as 4runners, whatever year you can get the best deal on 96 and up would be nice. If the traction control is important, I think it's either standard or just more common on 98+. Plus you get the real cup holders

I think a 62 and some straight cash would get someone a 4runner...

Maybe I'll end up like the cool kids and be a mini guy!

My third gen has served me well since I turned 16 fwiw. 20+ mpg stock, fairly safe, and just point and shoot in the snow. Plus a 96 and up is pretty tough to kill mechanically speaking

I've gotten away from the idea of 4x4 for my kids first car. Leaning toward Accord or Camry.
I know this forum is going to weight heavy in the direction of Toyota but you guys that actually know the mechanical and long term difference between the Accord and Camry can you give me your honest opinion? Ive never had a DD Toyota and my wifes Honda has 165K miles and literally drives like new.
Right now I am hot on a '02 Camry, can anybody tell me anything good or bad about the 2.4L in a 2002 Camry?
Only has 87K miles.

What number transmission are you on in that Honda?

Honda vs Toyota is a pretty pointless debate. They both will last longer than you would want to own them. But If you want to buy a vehicle with a lot of miles, I do believe that north of 200k, the Toyota begins to pull away. Plus the Toyota is cheaper because there is not a big performance after market industry built around them. My evidence is purely anecdotal, But I know a lot of people who torture Toyotas with 200, 300, 400k on them. And I know a lot of people who's Honda became a remarkable pain in the ass after 200k. 100k in the case for my sisters Acura.

Odds are the kid will want the sportier Honda over grandmas Toyota though.

2nd trany in the wifes Honda. I knew it was coming when I bought it 50K miles ago and it was priced accordingly, but, good point.

Thanks for the input fellas.
Another point as a general observation is that it seems the Honda's rust quicker than the Yota cars.
I test drove this Camry today, nice car, me likey.

The hunt is over....I bought the '02 Camry w/ 87k miles.
Got to keep it hidden until her 16th birthday.
Nice driving car.

will you be my dad?
