Hello everybody, I know this might sound dumb for some people but I need help picking the type and kind of oil to put in my truck I have 162xxx and it's burning about a quarter between oil changes any recommendations would be welcome thanks and btw I live in Florida and its a de

Search is your friend, this topic has been beaten to death. But if I were in FL I would run Mobil Delvac 15w-40 hands down all year.

I use rotella 15w-40 it seemed to help with oil consumtion

Up in PA,, Delo 15/40 year round ..

Depends on what tires you are running and do you have a lift?
Have you ever changed your PHH or had the head gasket redone.

We really need answers to these questions before we can answer any oil questions.

5W-30 like the cap says. I've tried 5 different oils on mine and haven't seen a change in oil consumption which is 1 quart every 3000 miles. I've been using Mobil 1 High Mileage Synthetic for a while now.

the cap and FSM say 5w-30.......agree with the mobil 1 high mileage though.......and really, people still ask this at least once a month since probably 2004?

Yup, I couldn't remember what it was exactly off the top of my head so I took a stab at it.

5w30 mobil1 extended performance each 10k miles...

I/ve been faithfully running 5w-30 high mileage for several years, and my undercarriage is thoroughly protected with the automatic anti-rust feature of a leaking rear main and possible an upper oil pan. Was recently discussing with our local LC mechanic Guru for our club, he suggested trying some 20w50, said it would slow those leaks dramatically. Gonna try it.

20w50 is some viscous stuff, even for TX. Even for a 3FE.

I'd certainly try 15w40 first.

Just my .02

I'm not a LC mechanic guru but I am a mechanic and I work on my LC...

Hey! Why can he ask anything, but I can't?

You certainly can. Just as I can post most any comment I choose. However, I chose to try to be helpful rather than what I perceived as sarcasm. If that was not your intent, then my apologies. But I see no relevance to oil choice in any of your questions.

Boring old 10w-30 high mileage. If you have an oil leak or are burning oil then fix your issue don't apply a band aid. Get at the ROOT.

The cap and the FSM say 5w30 because that is the weight mandated by the US EPA. In another country it probably says something else.

Anyway, use oil. 1FZ wants near 2 gallons if you let it drip overnight.

I'd absolutely LOVE to get at the root of the problem. I'd love to pull the engine, give it an overhaul and possibly do new rings and pistons, to the tune of $3000 to $6000. Or I'd love to pay the 20 hours shop labor of having the engine lifted off the mounts to seal the upper pan. However at $4 a quart for oil, the fact that I have three young kids, and have recently started a business - the idea of changing oil weights seems to be a fairly prudent and sound financial decision at this point in time.

Instead of getting preached to, I'd love to hear from people that actually did change oil weights and see what their results were.
