Used to work on an old tug that had no reverse gear, just started the engine in the other direction.

A bit disconcerting when that monster was heading towards you and the engine shut off....

Maybe it's a homemade 'electric assist'. Almost looks like one of those electric bike motors. That or maybe he's charging a battery and it's an alternator, haha.
