Bumping a slightly older thread.

I've got a FZJ80 steering box I'm going to put on moonshine (see sig). Going to rebuild and port with the stock sector shaft and hydro assist, hoping that the hydro assist will prevent a sector shaft break.

@maxamillion2345, I'm curious how you modified your stock saginaw reservoir to add capacity. Can you provide any additional details on it?

Took the cap off, cleaned up the top of the res, welded on a huge female thread male air nipple. Went to the local hose store and got some of the blue flextral push on hose to a remote reservoir with jic push fitting on one end and a hose clamp on the stock res side, didn't run a separate return just capped that off on the remote res. Then smeared rtv on my welds and painted just for good measure.
Like this but bigger
Dixon Valve DCP18 Steel Air Chief Industrial Interchange Air Fitting, Quick-Connect Plug, 1/2" Coupling x 1/2" NPT Female Thread, 150 CFM Flow Rating: Quick Connect Hose Fittings: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

No reason you couldnt do the same with one of these and then run jic to push fitting adapters.

Dixon 2404-12-12 Zinc Plated Steel Hydraulic Fitting, Adapter, 1-1/16"-12 NPT Male JIC 37 Degree Flared x 3/4"-14 NPTF Male: Hydraulic Hose Fittings: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

My hose is pretty big which IMO is a good thing. Like I said I kept the stock return and capped the return port off on the remote res and that doesn't seem to have mattered as far as I can tell. I also used the stock tranny cooler as my PS cooler which adds a lot of capacity. I fully retracted my ram after I got it pretty well bled and then filled my res up to about 3/4 full, doesn't drop out of sight fully extended.

Using something like this

Vertical Power Steering Reservoir Tank: AN 10 with Bracket & Clamps

Seems to work well.

Yup, makes sense, and you made sure that the aux reservoir is above that point. Slick solution :D

Now that my mind is moving in that direction, an alternative would be to swap saginaw reservoirs to a van reservoir, that has one return in the pump and a big fat nipple for an external reservoir. The second return would be in the external reservoir, like this:

1990-97 Chevrolet Astro Van Power Steering Pump - 36-517079

Thank you sir :D

The PSC remote fill reservoir can is only $45.00 and works well for what you want.

I was going to make a remote reservoir but at the end of the day I couldn’t make something as nice as theirs for less than they sell it for. The filter and duel returns are nice especially if you’re running a hydro boost.

I run the Van res and a remote on both my cruisers. Works slick..

If you want to stray away from the norm, a 78-79 F150 or Bronco box is huge and the steering is like driving a caddy. I have the bronco box, a custom pitman arm I made, 1.75" hydro assist ram, and a bored out stock pump on my 1uz. I only have an issue with the steering being kind of slow when the idle drops to 600 rpm. I have a aftermarket pump to solve that problem, just no time or desire to get it mounted.

A 1.5" ram will take a lot of stress off of your steering box. The only grip I have with Toyota boxes is the torsion spring in the box is stiff and with hydro assist you don't get full flow out of the box because the torsion spring won't open the valves all the way. A box with a lighter spring will work better. Also, if you are very careful and tap the box at the valve body you will get better fluid flow to the ram.

Here's a few pics of the Bronco box on my 4runner.

I think that front part of the frame isn't holding much weight. Maybe radiator, bumper and front body mounts. I think there is plenty of meat there and it looks like some pretty skillful fabrication. I wish he would show more pictures of that rig.

...And the front spring shackle... not much stress there...:meh:

I have one of those big ford steering boxes I will sell you if you decide you want to go that rout. Send a pm if your interested.

Evening Mud.

Does anyone know if the rumors are true that a newer 44110-60212 for the 80 series includes the upgraded 105 sector shaft from the factory?

A friend has a gently used one that's been offered.

Thanks
