The garmin 276C, has been one of the best GPS ever sold. IMO They keep selling on ebay for more then $400. They just seem outdated. I run MotionX on my ipad and use that for navigation. Is there a unit other than the Garmin Nuvis's as bad ass as the 276c? I am looking for a stand alone GPS solution. Where I can load map, and not have to depend on Cell DATA coverage for it to work.

this have been discuses several times in several forums and seems to be the consensus that there is nothing to replace the old mighty 276C

Looks like if you combine some Zumo, other Nuvi and Montana you will have the wonder of better modern 276C meanwhile .. I stick with mine ..

...smartphones?

276c? Hell, I still use a GPS V!

Same here. Hardwired and on all the time. I use it as a speedometer, trip odometer, and to record localities and reach waypoints. Lately it's been loosing reception for very brief periods and I know the day is coming when it will have to be replaced.

I have experience with the 176, 276c, 496c, the gpsmap62s and the Montana. I would call the Montana a very worthy succesor of the 276 line. It has a really large (sunlight readable) display, great reception and a TON more features than the 276c, including a "classic" profile which operates exactly the same as the 276c. It is also water resistant and a hell of a lot more memory. While the 276c will always be bombproof, it is outdated. With both the montana and the 62s I can download maps onto any micro sd card and use any micro usb charger to power it up with the option of regular batteries. The reason I mention this is because all the people I know who still have a 276c or similar have been struggling to find replacement cables, batteries and memory cards.

What does the 276c have that the Montana doesn't?

The Montana is an excellent combination of outdoor gps like the Oregon and combines on-road features of the Nuvi.

I have yet to find any smart phone app that has the ability to route and track like a dedicated gps and includes full computer based software package like mapsouce or basecamp. Phone apps work great for on-road business and the like where you search business/location, find its address/map and GO to its location. But offroad I use coordinates, terrain, topos, waypoints, etc. and use details of my tacks to create routes for future trips. I have not found an app that can do any of this.

My only complaint on the Montana is its size. I wish it smaller like the Oregon. It is just to big and heavy IMHO.

What does the 276c have that the Montana doesn't?

buttons .? actually I like 'em a lot .. but I know this it's not how the things are going to work so I gotta accept montana it's the future and we gotta embrace it ..

BTW since it use always ( or almost ) in my car size it's not a problem for me .. actually I don't mind the 276 size ..
