Circled in red. There are two vacuum hoses connected to one end, electrical connection on the other. One of the hose connections broke off and I forgot to write down the part number before I took the 4Runner to the paint shop this morning.

Thanks.

Vacuum switching valve.

Your's is an 85 w/ 22RE correct?

If so the part # should be 89570-35220, MUD price is $84.00.

x2.
although you could probably pick one up at a junk yard for a lot cheaper. they are pretty robust, so shouldnt be hard to find a working one. but i would check just in case.

all you need is a multimeter with continuity check and your mouth to check if its good or bad.

Thanks guys. I might be able to epoxy the broken nipple back on. If that doesn't work then it's the junk yard followed by new. The engine doesn't seem to be missing the disconnected hose at the moment.

i think that controls the power steering idle up, or maybe the AC idle up.

one of the two..not sure. either way, when the engine senses a load from one of those two things, it bumps up the engine rev a few rpms so it doesnt stumble and sound like its dying.

should be ok without it. i would just label and plug the vacuum lines until you get a chance to put it back together.

Thanks. Come to think of it, when my son came home the other day and the engine was good and hot it did idle awfully low intermittently (can't remember what we were doing with the engine running).

It's A/C idle up IIRC. You can epoxy the nipple back on as a temp fix but it usually won't last. The problem with getting a used one is the same problem you have now. Usually they are very brittle. If you do try to locate a used one, make sure you pull the hoses off from the other end and not the plastic end on the valve. Hopefully that will keep it from breaking.

This.

And they are harder to find in working condition than you'd think. Mine failed (open circuit in the coil), I checked lots of junkyard trucks and they were all gone. I bought one on eBay, and it arrived broken (same thing). Fortunately my son stripped the AC out of his truck last year so I grabbed his. I don't have AC anymore either, but I'm gonna wire mine up to boost up the idle speed when I turn on the OBA.

The plugs changed about '88 or '89, so if you get a later one you will need to hack the wiring to get it to plug into your harness.

LOL... we have the same plug wires.

Well according to Sam, this part is no longer available from Toyota. Not sure if there is an aftermarket equivalent but otherwise it will be repair or used.

If you can find any kind of generic VSV for pneumatic gear, like on factories, you might be in luck.
I'm thinking maybe a pneumatic air valve by Mac or some such, with two openings, a coil and a ball valve.
Maybe Granger has a solution for you, unless you want to stay OEM.

Yes, same deal, just different plug style now, erm then. (You know what I meant.)

I bet it would work, it should be the same concept. I looked it up on toyotapartszone.com and it's the VSV for the 3.0...just FYI

I can't imagine this is anything more than a solenoid with an on/off valve so it shouldn't make any difference; it's either open or closed.

If I can't repair mine and/or find a replacement then I will try one of these. 4Runner is still at paint shop (maybe finished today?) so it's not critical.

i did this a while ago for my arb compressor and it works great. i used a relay and also added my winch to the mix and it still works for my a/c as well. what's cool is you can adjust the idle up with that dial on the part(idle up adjustment valve) the vacuum hose goes to(and power steering hoses)

I have other ideas for controlling the idle when winching. Stay tuned...

just fyi....Mine broke and I epoxied it 4 years ago with PC-7...still working fine. I drive the truck every day.

Thanks; that's good to know.
