Anyone know what this canister is below the air filter on my 1993? Just noticed it. Owned this for 20 years and never saw it till tonite looking at the engine with headlamp. It’s the small canister below air filter. You can see one spring clip on it

It’s called the “tuna can”. It traps dust and debris from the air filter assembly. Lift clamp to remove and empty.

😂 This ^^
Probably want to pop it off and clean it.
Also If a small amount of water makes its way into your air filter it can settle into that low spot

If you are stranded in the wilderness you can add water and make soup.

Hey thanks I’ll open it up. I have followed maintenance and never saw any manual address this thing

She was clean. Maybe I had cleaned from top side when changing air filter
Can't be accessed from the air filter housing. Only a small slit to collect debris and water.
There should also be a rubber plug on the bottom of the dust can and a felt seal.

There was no felt but a rubber flap over the bottom of the dust can. After 40 years felt probably disappeared

Wow. You either have a house elf that cleans when you are asleep or only drive your cruiser in enclosed spaces. My 91 and 96 were both half full of dirt and other bits.

I drive on some dirt roads. In the past when changing air filter I have used a shop vac to clean filter housing and intake tubes. Have had mice nest in the past. Maybe that vac out this lower canister

Opening up the tuna can is a rite of passage in ownership, especially if your LC was neglected...
