This is great. I entered the Army back in the early 80's, I was a radio operator. I also worked at MARS stations ( Military Auxiliary Radio Systems) around the world. Never got around to getting my HAM license. Thanks for the inspiration, I'll start working on getting my license (Goals for 2024). Loving what you did on your Land Cruisers and congratulations to your wife for getting her license. Thanks
I haven’t heard of MARS is a very long time… I was a MARS operator in the early mid ‘80s. A very involved friend Mike,K2CTJ got me started with MARS. I would now think whether or not we may have communicated back then?

Thanks @bernardbar3 and @knuckle47 ! I wasn't a radio operator by job name, but a big part of my job was working the radios on C130's. Got hooked when we were doing a SAR 400 SE of Bermuda and were relaying messages to COMSLANT via NAS Tokyo. HF waves were bouncing clear over the continental US and landing in Japan, where they could hear us clearly. Slowly working on getting off my arse to get my general and hopefully extra so I can go back to playing with those HF waves.

Good to hear. My wipers need some help. They are running very slowly and the sprayer doesn’t work. Wondering where I start?
Start by checking that the wiring is correct - look for warm connectors and wires. They take a lot of current and a bad connection can slow them right down.

I just added a sprayer to mine. The spray is activated by twisting the wiper knob. Pull the knob out of the dash and disconnect it. Clean it up and then test continuity by connecting the spray tab and ground on the body of the switch. Twist and the contact should show infinite continuity. If not clean up the contacts on the outside of the switch. Then check the continuity to the 2 wire connector in the engine bay. Mine is on the drivers side near the firewall. If all is good, plug it all back in and you should hear the sprayer motor run when you twist the knob.

Others here have more experience with the motor and linkage. I got lucky and was able to lube everything in place. For the motor I removed the worm drive cover and carved out the crappy old grease, cleaned up the contacts and added fresh new grease. I ran them for a bit and added a bit more and closed it up.

oh... only double wire hose clamp after this:

The Brown Santa just delivered tie rod ends, stainless windshield hinge screws, and a new cap that goes between the windshield frame and hard top. Tomorrow and Sunday will be high 50's and sunny, so I'll be wrenching!

Replaced the original water pump on my 1977 FJ40 with an Aisin water pump from @cruiseroutfit. Took the old pump off cleaned the gasket off the block & chased the threads with a 10x1.5 m tap. Took the backing plate off the new pump and sealed it with FIPG then put it back together and then put on the gasket from the pump to block on and covered that in FIPG. Put the new pump on the block and torqued the bolts to 14ft/lb. I followed this Water pump replacement write up as a guide but didn’t fully remove the radiator or lower the front bib just removed the fan shroud instead and it gave me more than enough room.

My washer/wiper switch contact surface which is exposed was dirty. I cleaned it up and the pump started working again. Easy fix.

In preparation for the rear ARB locker install, I went ahead and tackled the switch mounting. I "borrowed" a design from @EmanC who was gracious enough to share his CAD file. From there, I tweaked it a bit and sent it off to SendCutSend.com. First time using them and I highly recommend. Very fast turnaround. And for a slight upcharge, I had the bracket powder coated. I'm using OEM fog light switches and some 10mm green indicator lights.

Replaced the fuel lines to the fuel separator and the filler neck hose on my 1977 FJ40.
1st pic:What I started with after removing the 2 metal pieces that cover these lines.
2nd pic: The 3 screws that need to be removed to take off the filler neck in order to replace the hose from the filler neck to the tank
3rd pic: Picture of filler neck with original part# sticker still on it (I just thought this was cool)
4th pic: Lines from the fuel separator to the tank that I replaced (old lines on the right hand side) i also replaced part #90917-10020 the white check valve pictured. I took the fuel separator out of the truck because I felt it was easier to work on and less risk of breaking the plastic nipples.
5th pic: Finished product before reinstalling the 2 metal covers. I still have to replace smaller line from the filler neck to the tank but have the on order at the moment. This also gave me the opportunity to clean that area which was pretty dirty beforehand.

Finally found some time to wrench on the 40 over the weekend, been so busy with family and holiday stuff the 40 has just sat for weeks with no attention. Scraped and cleaned up everything then reinstalled the head onto the 2F using an OEM gasket. Paid special attention during the torque sequence as a couple bolts were out of spec when it was removed. Installed the push rods and bolted on the rocker arm. Finished up all the cooling system plumbing and added a new temperature sender as well. It will be a week or so until I can get back in the garage but I am hopeful to have this beast running again by the end of the year. Happy holidays! 🎄
