Photo_Cruiser,

(This is not meant to be condescending... please don't take it that way.)

Automatic Transmission.
aka Tranny, transmission, A/T

Transfer case
aka Xfer, X-Fer

I hope the terminology didn't confuse you and the wrong fluid got in the wrong place. I *really* hope gear oil didn't get in the automatic transmission. You might be OK if Dexron III got in the transfer case but I'll have to defer to more knowledgeable people. If gear oil got in the tranny then you have a big problem... a really big problem. (Please say no)

Oh Man..

I got Dexron in my tranfer case...and I didn't touch the transmission. Dexron went into the transfer case, right under Slee's skid plate. Man I thought I cheked that out twice in the FSM. I should stick to commercial photography.

So I guess tonight I'll re-drain that, and add gear oil, drain it again and add gear oil again to clean it out? ssssshhhh**!

And I'll put Dexron in the transmission

Photo_Cruiser,
Have you driven the truck? If yes, how far?

C-Dan.... Is dirty fingernails still around? Whatcha think? Should I call Dave?

Ah Man..this stinks, when I drained that T case, it was black, so couldn't tell, color wise, what a rookie frickin error.

After putting on all that OME and doing breathers I figured I couldn't blow this jeeeezzz. I hope i never meet you guys argh!

Photo_Cruiser,

Like I always tell my staff, "don't worry about making mistakes as there is no mistake that you can make that I haven't already made." (That's not true but it gives them confidence :G )

I think you'll be OK with only 5 miles. I sent a message to my engineer friend that is a lubrication expert. My predicition is that you'll have a VERY clean transfer cases on the inside; otherwise no harm will come. We'll see what Dave says.

Don't let this little glitch deter you from learning more about the truck and doing some maintenance. Just be sure to ask questions of the list and be sure you understand what we're talking about if we start throwing around acronyms and using different terms.

D.F. says no harm, no foul. I agree. Drain the ATF out of the transfer and re-fill with 75-90. take it for a spin, say 25 miles or so, surface streets. Drain and re-fill again. You are probably fine after that. The good news is the coupler($$$) is a sealed unit, and should not be affected.

With only 5 miles (+/-) on the Transfer Case, which you accidently filled with Transmission fluid won't hurt anything. Transmission fluid generally looses its lubricating properties after extended periods of 250 degrees or more.

So you should be ok - don't worry, we all make mistakes.

Change out the fluid in the Transfer Case & flush with standard oil, and then put in the good stuff - synthetic!

Photo_Cruiser,

Now that you're back on track with the transfer case...

>> the OME steering stabilizer, <<

Start another thread and get some advice on this installation. Some have had problems getting the old one off. You can pick up some tips to help; also to be sure you have all the right tools.

Piece of cake with a tie rod end puller.

Ok,
well back on track, got home, wife actually never drove the truck today, drained the case, added 75/90 gear oil, drove 15 miles, drained it and re-filled. By the way, 75/90 is hard to find around here, but 80/90 is all over the place, what's up with that?

As far as the OME stabilizer, I have pickle forks, will unmount it, at least the one end of the stabilizer, and the ,unting plate end, put it in a vice and hammer it apart w/ the pickle forks. But I will start a new thread about it, just to get the tips down, and I will do it in the next couple of days.

No harm I guess, All I can say is I've been blowing cash on tools, have outgrown my big toolbox, have grease rags all over, and a box of greasy stuff I wear, to work on the rig in, and in all it's a great thing!!! Now to score some time off to go wheeling, that comes next week, unless I break somethin'

How much gear oil is needed to do the f/r diffs & transfer case?

Getting back to "what fluids where", I just picked up a tube of "Mobil One Synthetic Grease", it says good for chassis, wheel bearings, etc., can be mixed w/ lithium grease. I want to use it to grease my u-joints, drive shaft, steering (?) Anybody used this stuff, see any problems with it?

I have some and used it to pack wheel bearings and hub. I will be squirting it everywhere else tomorrow. I'll let you know if anything explodes. :G
