What do you all think of Toyota Trails?

Mark,

I hope that your "talking to the hand" reference isn't aimed at Tony, Alan or myself. I think we're all good listeners and I appreciate feedback, good and bad. And sometimes people just need to rant a little. But you knew that.... :D

Calm down guys. There's no 'beef' here.

What I mean is that ALL of us have been down this road SO MANY TIMES, that the answers have been boiled down to that quintessential point where it would just save energy to have something like a position statement posted. And since all of you have honed your answers to such a fine point, I just meant we could use them rather than having you retype them each time this comes up.

Capiche?

:)

Mark,

I understand your point now. Thanks for clarifying.

My concern is that if we issue a blanket statement, there would be feedback not received that might have been helpful. I like to hear other opinions and it never hurts to take a step back and consider if the path we're on is where we want to be.

I do sometimes wish that folks would consider tone when they give feedback. The golden rule and being kind and polite to others goes a long way with me. I don't process yelling very well.

I feel like this is probably beating the proverbial horse, but I'll say my two cents. I too have been a TLCA member for 10 years or so. I remember when Trails was still all black and white and much lower quality. Heck I wasn't far behind the days when it was still stapled and photocopied. Gary Bjork paved the way for some serious upgrading and and updating to the newsletter and really got it rolling. Henry Brimmer continued by bringing some top notch design into the mix. And personally, with my own art/design background, I think Todd has done an outstanding job and raised it to another level. Good work boys.

As for content, I love and appreciate the variety. Nice to learn about what other stuff is out there that fits under the umbrella described (a Toyota 4WD vehicle with a lowrange in the t-case) I think it's a stretch, but I supposed techinically the earlier 4WD Tercel wagons fit the criteria. Anyway, I started out with an FJ40 and in the beginning I couldn't get enough info. Online message boards were'n't really happening yet although the LCML was around. So I was holding my breath each month until TT showed up and I could get the tech I needed for the next round of mods I had planned. I've also had two different minitrucks since then and was extremely glad to have a truck-tech section in the publication that I was already receiving, and not have to go find some other source for that information. Same thing goes for the 80 series that I have now.

The fact is times are changing and if the TLCA is to continue, new vehicles will make their way into the mix. I welcome the FJ, the new Tacoma and the 200 series as the aftermarket and owners with the courage to really start wheeling them increases. There are definitely issues of TT that I appreciate more than others or find more beneficial because of whatever content is in each particular issue. But just because I'm looking for a certain type of tech doesn't mean that someone else isn't looking for exactly what I thought wasn't helpful. And like Todd and others have said, if you want specific information included, write it and send it in.

off-topic.....Tony, I was stoked to finally be attending CM again this year. Knowing that you're coming makes it even better. Butch I wish you could make it, but understand the hassle and the cost. I miss rubbing shoulders with what I call the TLCA old-timers like you guys. It's been a while. Take care and see you all in Moab.

Looking forward to it Adam! Also bummed Butch cannot attend. Cindy will be really bummed...

No other event hosts such a wide variety of TLCA members... Not sure whether I am attending to wheel or visit all my friends. :)

Your comments about TT are spot on.

Huh?
When people talk, I try to listen, and come up with solutions.

If there's a way for me to do this better, please let me know?

thanks, alan

this:beer:for you:cheers:

Mr. Kaderabek,

has the idea been proposed that for one issue all the color pages be filled with only photos? a 'photography' issue of Trails? put out a request for photographs never shared online? it might be a beast to try and go through all of them but i think it would be a cool issue. they could be broken down by model or style. even fill some of the monochrome pages with greyscale photos. just a thought.

First off, why are you calling me Mr. Kaderabek...?

As to your suggestion, Dave, I don't know if this has come up previously or not. I'm not opposed to the idea for the most part. I do think it would exclude a lot of editorial content (the regular columns, for example). At the very least we would need descriptive captions so it wasn't just a Photo Bucket page in magazine form.

I think the obstacles would be as follows:

1) Cost -- we're scraping by to maintain 32 pages of color now. Running 64 pages of 4C would be cost prohibitive. But we could afford it in the current format, 32 pp 4C, 32 pp 1C. Maybe 32 pages of color rigs and 32 pages of the regular 1C columns?

2) Obtaining submissions -- it's so much easier to "prematurely epubulate" :D on the internet than it is to be patient enough to be published in a print magazine. You're well aware of this (and have been very patient). Most people aren't this way. They want it easy, fast and on their screen. The TLCA Member Rigs section is a good example of this -- it's about to be discontinued due to lack of submissions. To populate 32 pages of the same sort of content could take months to collect, by which time 50% of it would have been posted to Mud, Pirate and TTORA. And old news is old news.

So yeah, I'm open to the idea. I'm not sure logistically how to pull it off. I'll give it some more thought.

I just did a Google search for "epubulate"- it says "there are no documents that match these search terms, please try again."

Mr. Kaderabek- did you make up this word or is it some kind of Carolina thing?:flipoff2:

Trust me -- it is not a Carolina thing. We're too laid back....

It's my term -- refers to folks who want to get things out (if you will) perhaps a little faster than might be prudent.

If you know what I mean.

it made me laugh. although i'm dumb enough to understand it:flipoff2:

i guess i didn't exlain clearly. i just meant photos for the color pages we currently have not the whole mag as color. for sure it would have to include a blurb of the truck, the location, the photographer etc. what spawned the idea is i've been going through old club run photos on my harddrive and posting them in the WC forum as a game to see who can name the truck, the owner and location. (see attached photo, 2 people got it)

i agree most people do suffer from premature epulation but i also think there a quite a few TLCA members who would be willing to wait on showing the photo if it were for the right cause.

The reason i called you Mr? it's better than Jackass:flipoff2: (check your email shortly, you have no idea the trip you missed out on)
