I thought I would start this thread with just that...:D

I unwound the honey suckle growing around my cb antenna:flipoff2:

Used it to move into a new house. I am now officially OTP. <sigh>

nuthin, mine is perfict and wheels awsome

brake line problem

Ok guys, I was working on my brakes this weekend trying to install new stainless steel lines on the front. However, the existing flared connection from the master cylinder does not want to connect to the new SS brake line:bang:. Then other end fits fine into the caliper. I measured with a micrometer and it is a bit wide.
Can this be due to someone tightening it down too much?
WHat can I do, buy a new section of steel brake line and replace it or what?

... I measured with a micrometer and it is a bit wide.
...

Andrew,
Since you used a micrometer, how much is your "bit wide"? (again since you used a mic; did you do a search on the specs for the flare geometry to make a comparison?)

Plus, is this rigid SS line or flex SS? If it is rigid, could the bends be slightly off such that the threads are not engaging?

Larry, if I am reading my micrometer correctly, the expand flare is 0.2796 and the normal flare fitting is 0.2771 so ther is a difference of 0.0025 off. The wide flare is on one of the rigid ends from the master cylinder. Actually a 6 inch piece that can be replaced. I may just order one. The other side fit fine so I have a feeling it was torques too tight initially. Does that make sense.
I want to replace the pads with carbon metallics, new rotors and ss flex lines.
Have read it is a good way to go

Advise?

Andrew,
Any chance for pictures? Also you measured two flares (0.2796 and 0.2771) but they both could be in tolerance. For example, design might call for 0.277 with a +/- tolerance of 0.025 I have no idea what it should really be (just trying to illustrate the point)
Sorry, but I am already whipped out tonight (the drive back from CMCC was 12 hours yesterday without AC which has still has the better of me)

PS (my 2 cents) FYI I have used the higher performance brake pads in the past on our trucks and did not like the results. The performance pads seemed to be harder with more heat capacity which yielded longer pad life and should have improved braking performance. The key results that I noticed were shorter rotor life with higher incidence of warping in the rotors. Now I use, the basic pads which wear out faster and I change them more frequently, but this is very easy compared to replacing rotors or having them machined.

Larry,

sorry no pictures of flange, and I think I measured the flare only rather than the screw thingy at the end. I will check some more measurements and let you know (practice with mic reading).
So this is what I did.
Bought the bendy brake lines at Napa and bent them just about the same.

here are the SS lines

and here is the installed rotor, without the caliper on.

Princess helped with bleeding. Now need to bed them in and see how they do. I do agree with you that the pad could wear out the rotors faster and I will see what I get in terms of braking. Right now the old pads really did not do well with braking. I still have the old pads just in case. I hear mixed reviews on ceramics.

Anyone else use PF carbon metallics?
and what about adaptive 1 brakes from NAPA?

I am like Larry, I use the cheaper pads (regular duralast) and just change them more frequently. I had a friend that got DBA (some over priced high performance brakes) rotors and pads for his 80 and they wore out way faster than the price was worth.

Nick,

Did you get your front e-locker wired up?

Andrew,
If you have it all installed with the brakes bled (with the aid of the :princess:), then all your issues/concerns appear to resolved. Correct?

Also, I like your workmanship on your replacement brake line. I know who to call for the lines on the 70 that need to be replaced.

I aired the tires up, hooked up the battery, DIDN'T CHECK ANYTHING ELSE, and wheeled the wee out of her. drove it home this time (no trailer)

Yea, the actuator and motor were all gummed up so we had to take it all apart, clean it and then put it all back together.

Does "we" indicate that the honeymoon is over and you have your lovely bride cleaning driveline parts on your truck now?
Even if it is not, that could make an interesting photoshop product ... Bride in wedding dress at the parts washer or under the truck.

She was around when the work was getting done, but she wasnt getting dirty. She did get a crack out of the wedding dress comment.

pure blasphemy!!!!!

How so? when you know your truck, you can have complete confidence in it and not have to worry much that it will get you home. Just need to overbuild and you won't have a problem.:D:lol:
