I frequently (at least annually) :) have to add gear oil to the FJ40 transmission. Because it is blocked by the skid plate it is a real pain to get a hose snaked in between the frame and the cab. Every year I swear I'm gonna cut an access hole to fill it from above, but never seem to get around to it.

This year I got around to it because I was going to replace all the oil in the transfer case and transmission and knew I didn't want to fight it pushing a half gallon of oil into the transmission.

I used almost an entire gallon of MT-90 filling up the Orion transfer case and the 3 speed transmission today. Also changed the engine oil & filter.

Marking out the new fill hole

Most would just remove the skid plate and call it good. Personally I just use a floor jack. Little pressure remove the six bolts and lower. I see you have the transmission and transfer case fills connected with a hose. Usually oil migrates to the transmission..if that is the case keeping the transfer full should be set.

On my 65 FJ45 the PO cut the transmission cover in half side to side. Probably done when the transmission was changed from a column to a floor shift. Guess it was easier than removing seat and gas tank. My 65 is 9/64 build date and does not have the optional heater offered in the 65 model. Aftermarket heater heater is above the passenger feet and not a problem removing the transmission cover.

My transfer case is always full - the transmission pumps oil through the seal and into the transfer case, the hose returns some of the oil to the transmission. The rest leaks out of the transfer case rear output shaft onto the ground.
I only ever have to top off the transmission . . .

Finally got some free time this morning to peel away and put another 50 or so miles on this, in hopes to recreate the stalling/no idle issue I ran into a few weeks ago while cruising with the family. No luck, ran great.

I’m sure it’ll happen again the next time I load the girls up to take a drive. Ha.
