Hit 66,666 miles since I installed the UltraGauge in the Taco

Toyota ought to be ashamed of the Tacoma’s gas mileage.

15.1 mpg over the last 66,666 miles is pathetic. My 53 year old Land Cruiser gets 13.5.

None of my Toyotas have ever gotten very good mileage. Maybe my 1986 mini truck with a 22RE, but even then it was maybe 25-26mpg.

Incidentally, when I swapped a 400hp 6L V8 into my 80 in place of the 1FZ-FE, I not only tripled the wheel HP, but get 2mpg better.

Only if you don’t have enough lift or width.

When your pre-trip safety check on a truck turns up more than you bargained for… Thankful for a local Toyota dealer who can get parts next day, and still stay mostly on schedule for a trip to cooler mountains!

New hose good for another 27 years. (Faster delivery, but NOT cheaper than an Amazon knockoff).

Thanks @FindlayToyotaFlagstaff !!

My parts guy at Right can usually get parts in stock overnight and that is a good feeling.

This thing has been a lot of work but it has been fun. Installed a snorkel kit this weekend along with 2" OME heavies in the front and rear. The PO installed OME stock height heavies which were nice but the 315 rubbed when flexed and were real harsh when the 80 was unloaded. I have been real impressed with the ride of the new springs. Also install a LCP sway bar disconnect which was pretty straight forward.

About four years ago, I was given a drawer system from @Pitch after he bought a new to him 80 that came with it and he didn't have the need for it. It was a little rough around the edges but worked great for tens of thousands of miles and adventures but I finally got the itch to upgrade.

I came to this because I got a fantastic deal on a used Dometic CFX40 fridge & insulator for $250 and just wanted something better suited for my needs. Not wanting to shell out the $4,000-$9,000 most companies are wanting for full length (no second or third row seating) I set out to build my own.

Essentially, the foundation is 3/4" Baltic Birch Ply, with some 1/4" sprinkled in, all sealed and/or stained with a polyurethane sealant and a carpeted exterior. The top has 1/4" neoprene foam under the carpet for a little cushion and noise dampening. The drawers are 36" deep on 500lb drawer slides. Where the drawers end, I left open for easily accessible storage where the second row seats would go.

I incorporated a friction tight slot to hold my 200W portable solar panels, with 2x4s for support when removed. The fridge slide is the tilting option from Ironman.

Its a little rough around the edges, some of my plywood bowed, the carpeting isn't perfect and we'll see how it stands the test of time. Can't even say it was particularly fun to build doing it all in my garage & driveway in this summer heat... but I made it and its mine so I love it (and was *significantly* more affordable than buying premade options).

Just finished it yesterday and we'll see how it holds up... leaving on another cross country trip to Montana and back for 2-3 weeks on Sunday!

When I get back from the trip, I plan on paying it forward like Pitch did for me, and offering up the old drawer system for whoever wants it

Thanks. The template is junk unfortunately. I put painters tape on the fender and took some measurements and found the holes near the door were off by about half a hole and had to move them toward the door. They were also the hardest to get fastened as well. Had to talk myself into drilling the first hole but it’s worth it.

Mine is second hand so I don’t even have the template. But keep hearing how bad it is anyway. Was thinking of making one from construction paper to transfer the holes.

This thread seems to have the best instructions.

Mine is off brand too, I have a template around which was traced over from the original template so hopefully it is good to go.

I can’t this week but let know if you wanna tag team the stress of drilling huge holes on both trucks lol

Scott, that template is one I duplicated from the Safari Snorkel i bought. I don't think I am going to do a snorkel on my new build, so not sure there is value in me holding on to the Safari Template. If you guys want to use the genuine one, hard for me to see a reason why not.
