Spent the day with @JDM Journeys showing me the ropes and tricks with a full belt (incl idler) + coolant + rad hoses change. The HZJ78 came three years ago with under 70K km, but as a year 2000 the age of the belts (especially timing, with no known replacement) was becoming a question mark.
What we found was reassuring and there was likely a replacement at some point, but it’s great to reset the clock. And most of all I’m thankful for the babying of someone experienced, in order to understand the process without the risk of making a mistake. Considering the state of the engine, cooling system, coolant, etc, we elected not to replace the water pump.

Re-installed the transfer case after changing the input shaft seal and gasket. Hopefully that will stop the leak between the transmission and transfer case. Also installed the PTO gearbox so I can get the PTO winch functional again and put new parking braking shoes on. Going to be on the road again soon.

Can you share a pic of PTO gear box? I am curious how that setup is configured

Wish i got a picture of it i had jokes about putting my h55 in my HJ47 but really just moved the pallet holding it onto the flatbed haha

I did manage to figure out that the PO at some point had put 14V glow plugs in the 12V truck so my guess is thats why it has alot of trouble starting, bus bar is also hit and miss with voltage so for the sake of getting it running ill be trying to install a wilson switch to just see if between that and a new fuel filter, tank cleaning and some fresh fuel with injector cleaner can clear up some smoke if not ill go ahead and get the injectors rebuilt.

Cleaned the bottom of the timing cover in the garage and found where i believe it to be leaking, so im hoping i can do the Crankshaft seal and timing cover gasket and not be pouring oil all over everything then its running.

Finally printed out some custom oil change stickers for my HDJ81 and my brother's Prado. I'm really happy with the way they turned out, so I figured I'd see if anyone else wanted any. If there's interest, I'm going to order another batch of these reusable, dry erase stickers - one set with "kilometers" and one set with "miles". The stickers are 1.75x2.63" and will be $5 each shipped. PM me if you're interested!
