Not when it’s in Dog mode. The interior camera is designed to make sure your eyes are on the road and then used to check-in on your pet. The camera is disabled from some one else being allowed to watch you while you’re driving. Say for instance, your wife wants to see who is in your passenger seat from her phone app. She’s out of luck. :rofl::D
 
I used the BlackVue DR900X-2CH. Pretty simple installation...granted I already had the whole drivers side apart for other wiring.

I bought a cheap 2k off Amazon…front only, but I think I’m going to get a front and rear (maybe inside as well). I need to run wires to the back anyway for extra power/usb, sound deadening, etc so may as well do a camera back there as well.
 
The one camera I didn't do was interior. I figure that's more for Uber/ridesharing people. If someone is in my car, hopefully they are there by invitation.

I saw this a while back and I don't think its safe to say that you can just drop the discernment all together.

Make sure you get the latest, and largest Sony image sensor possible (best in industry), and a good feature set.
But after that yeah, clones really outside of name brands like Garmin. Which I may upgrade to.

I haven't seen the video, but I thought Sony had a rep of being pretty protective over their IP/optical lenses in the past and going after those that ripped them off.

Blackvue is definitely expensive and I know it's not everyone's cup of tea given alternatives. I went with them because I want the best available tech (imo), solid support reputation (I can confirm), and cloud connectivity for video backup in addition to the card in the camera. I look at the self-install as me getting a discount on the hardware portion. It also gives me a chance to look behind the curtain and see the interesting bits between the plastic trim and sheet metal. This and I also have a tough time with letting others do work on my cars when I can do it myself. I remember being in high school listening to the kids working in the car stereo shop talking about what they did/DIDN'T do for high end work on installs.

Sony is probably? the largest sensor manufacturer in the world. They love to sell their sensors. And their sensors are the best.
Im not sure if its a matter of unlicensed use. The camera makers have nowhere near the level of manufacturing in the next billion years to make their own or "copy" anything.

Sensor in iPhone is sony, sony cameras, all manner of DSLRs, a s***load of cinema equipment, and many things like these dashcams are all using them.
They are just purchased.

Not sure what Blackvue uses, but i am more and more just ponying cash for Name Brands these days since I cant trust a single product out of chinese companies.
 
Has anyone here used the Wolfbox mirror type dash cams? @TeCKis300 how is it working out for you? I was considering getting this but after reading some of the comments here I'm worried about the weight of the unit hanging off of the mirror mount when going off-road. My entire rear view is now blocked due to dual swing outs and fridge so my main use to be able to see the rear. BTW, these are on sale right now.

I don’t have the one you mentioned but I use this one made by Haloview. After 20K I’ve had no issues with weight and we’ve done plenty of dirt and corrugated road driving. The only issue I’ve had is it slightly obscures the programmable garage door buttons on the mirror but they are still visible and easily accessible.

One thing to note is that when I’m not towing there is no picture on that screen so it still functions as a mirror. Also, when I am towing and there is a picture from behind my camper I can also still see the view out my rear window if I focus my eyes appropriately… this is handy to see how my camper is behaving.

There is a slight delay in picture from the rear camera but it’s not a deal breaker. The camera out the front shoots really well.

I've tried one of those strap on cams and it didn't work for me. The forward camera will have a lot of glare and be off center. The ergonomics and aesthetics were poor. And most imporantly to your question, there was vibration and movement when driving hard off-road.

I'm using a unit that completely replaces the stock rearview and it works well. Takes a bit to get use to the perspective.

That's an awesome camera. Wish there was a product that replaces the rearview completely, and can take multiple wireless cams for towing and not-towing.

100% this. That and/or allow for the native cameras to act as dash cams. Something like the Tesla sentry mode should be commonplace nowadays.
 
There was an iOS based app and camera system that used Wi-Fi and did allow multiple cams, Split View, etc. unfortunately it was killed by a change in the wi-fi stack in an iOS upgrade, and the vendor didn’t pay to get their app updated. It’s been a few years now, sad to see the hardware get nuked by a SW incompatibility.
 
I have been pretty happy with Viofo. I have used the A119 v3 and A129 Duo in a couple vehicles and am using the A139 in the cruiser. Sometimes the A139 will have issues off-road but that may be a firmware or settings issue (I bought this unit very early in production lifecycle).

The A119 in my daily has already paid for itself many times over.

This.

I had a Viofo A129 prior. Excellent video quality. Compact. Everything great about a dashcam.

If I didn't have the need for a backup mirror, I would have stayed with the Viofo.
