Hi

I am not sure if the previous owner has done any engine rebuild or not as I have no history records. Almost at 570K on the clock. Drives well. What work can be done on the engine as preventive maintenance for long trip security measures ? I don't want to do full engine rebuild at the moment .

Thanks

Do a compression test and leak down test and go from that.

^^ Yes, as above
then if it runs good, go with it.
replace all the rubber hoses and lines attached to it (PHH... so ive heard)
check the valves
check the fan clutch
replace all the fluids in ALL the different systems
do a few oil changes in quick succession
fix or address any leaks ......
basically protect it from itself

Classic 80 owner looking to spend money!! If it’s running well just check the basics Oil, fluids, cooling system, brakes and maybe a tuneup. Not much that’s gonna leave you stranded besides a failed hose or overheating. Compression check will give you some idea of engine condition. Old radiator or heater valve are common failure points if they are brittle. Good advise above.

Totally agree with this.
If it's not burning oil or losing coolant, give it a basic service, change all fluids, and catch up any overdue maintenance with things like hoses etc

No different to what you'd do for a 30 year old 200k km engine

If it's done 570k km, the Toyota magic pixies are in there doing their thing just fine. Don't let em out.

Fan clutch is definitely something that gets overlooked.

Another thing you can do to put your mind at ease ( or not) find somewhere that does used oil sample analysis. Just google "used oil sample analysis, Australia". There's a bunch of options.

When you dump the engine oil, send away a sample to be analysed.
This can tell you if there's excessive bearing metal in the oil, which indicates a wear problem, or if there's coolant or other contaminants in the oil.

Check fluids and drive.

I say flush cooling system with distilled water (no cleaners!!) and replace radiator/waterpump/thermo/hoses and clamps with new red coolant.

Keep it from over heating and keep that head gasket together..

Post up some Pics of Engine & Underneath and you will get enough Advice that you will not know where to start.

I’ve always ran BG MOA through an engine I intend to keep before I do its first oil change. You’ll be amazed at how black that oil will come out and how clean it’ll stay after it’s been changed.

That's only 350k miles.

I've seen 80 series odometer fraud where a dealer sold one with that many miles as only having 140k miles. You really couldn't tell without getting deep into it that it wasn't a low mile 80.

Based on experience...

570,000 kilometers... yawn. Drive it and treat it like you would any used rig. When you get to 800,000 KM... post up again.

Mark...
