Some of that Big Band stuff was really good... My mother had 78s and 33s, listened to them, classical, 40s, 50s, 60s pop. Always music playing in our house.

Understand that this stuff was a decade before I was born…but even in the late 60’s and early 1970’s, as a teenager, I was exposed to this stuff on tv .
So, despite having only 4-5 channels this is the stuff we watched until Don Kirschners’ Rock Concert and The Midnight Special started in the ‘70s.

To get a brief summary of who some of these great band leaders were…start with this one…The Glenn Miller Story with Jimmy Stewart and June Allison.

It really gives a nice summary of his rise to stardom and you’ll hear some great classics

I grew up the same way, was born in 60. The late movie was a staple in our house. Midnight Special and SNL as well. First cast SNL. Spoiled me for any that followed. I am very grateful that I grew up in the era that I did and where I did. Just the music I was exposed to. I remember seeing stuff like The Beatles on Ed Sullivan and not understanding what all the fuss was about as a kid. I have a sister that is 4 years older so I was always hearing her records as well. We had an intercom system in the house and the stereo could be piped through it. Crap speakers though. My grandmother used it all the time to call me so she did not have to do stairs, split level.

My mother loved live music and went to a great many concerts. I was about 14 and she came to me one Sunday afternoon and asked if I would escort her to a concert at the Spectrum in Philadelphia that night. She had two tickets and her friend was sick and could not go, so I went. To see The Gaithers, religious concert. We get up to the building and there are Blue Oyster Cult posters everywhere. They were there Fri and Sat. My Mom was in a fit over a "Cult" having been there. I explained and it calmed her a bit. "Who in their right mind names the band a Cult?"

For those of us who did the first few seasons of SNL, the rest of the 40 year of broadcast has been a sparse field of entertainment..maybe 10 episodes out of a few hundred. We’d gather in a friends basement for those simulcast concerts on Midnight Special and FM-radio stations. The Spectrum was a great place for concerts. Been there several times.

I THINK the last show I saw there was in the ‘80s with Kenny Rogers and Dolly…my wife loved Islands in the Stream.I would agree with you on that time frame…although I am really enjoying the current space and time, I could always use more of it. Would love to see the newest developments 50 yrs from now

Had my obnoxious 2 hour commute today north when suddenly on the radio this pops up….especially this was a staple for 3 decades when I was a kid, a teenager and a young married guy. We have probably seen most episodes of I love Lucy 25 times or more

Great seeing guys like Billy and band keeping Bluegrass alive. My buddies and I spent a few summers going to Bluegrass fests. What great memories. Philadelphia Folk Fest as well. I worked there two years.
