i'm looking at a 85 pickup, was talking to the owner about the condition of the truck and he tells me it has had a new timing chain put on and one thing and another, and i can go talk to the mechanic to find out more specifics. so i go to talk to him and he tells me the same but he says he had to weld the timing chain cover back on because apparently when it broke the chain slapping the cover knocked a hole in the side of the cover. this sounded odd and a like it could turn into a huge PITA were something else to go wrong and need to do a rebuild.

what do you guys think about this? I have minimal wrenching skills/experience. he's asking $2000 everything else seems ok condition.

Need to see if he just welded up the hole and/or crack or welded the cover to the engine. It would be hard to weld it to the engine block cus metal don't weld to aluminum very well.

If the guides break, the chain can wear a groove into the side of the cover and cut into a water passage... which turns your oil into a milk shake, and if not taken care of right away can eat bearings.... So my concern would be if it was taken care of quickly, and if not, did they checked the bearings?

I'd use it as leverage if they weren't on top of things, changing the bearings on an 85 isn't that big of a deal (assuming 4x4) maybe 2-3 hours, and it's not rocket science.

This is what he said happened and i really didn't understand what he was saying(limited mechanical knowledge). So would this mean he welded that? I just don't see welding the cover onto the engine.

He probably welded the groves carved into the cover by the chain. Not an uncommon thing to do considering the price of a new timing cover.

New timing chain cover kits are getting more inexpensive. Enginebuilder.com is where i purchased mine along with a new oil pump and H2o pump.. I think the cover with gaskets and chain "kit" was under $100 shipped. Decent stuff but of course not OEM

Timing cover, not kit.

Part 11302-35010, $244.24 list.

Check flea bay they are on there all the time.Just looked and found a crap laod on there ranging from $24.99 to $44.99 for just the cover. Then anywhere from $64.99 to $84.99 for cover and timing kit .Seen one for $189 for everything cover.oil pump, water pump and all the timing components with steel guides.

Check it out some good prices, thats where I got my timing cover at and it actually fit right.

Not uncommon at all. Here is a pic of what happened to mine.

Great pics and info guys thanks a lot. What should i listen/look for when i crank this baby up and take it for a ride. i know someone mentioned it can fawk up the bearings if it was not tended to quickly.

I got a new Timing Cover with Water and Oil pumps, timing set with steel backed driver guide(to prevent this from happening again), Bearings and a new RV Cam, all for under 300 CAD including Shipping and Brokerage fees. Granted Shipping isn't far from ENGNBLDR to me, but still had to cross a border.

Welding will work, and if you have the means to do some Aluminum, a pretty easy job(no worries on appearance). But when you open those shiny new parts, it will all be worth it I think. Especially if your old one is as dirty as mine was.

When you go to take it for a ride: If there is a knocking noise on startup, that can mean the bearings are going south...... If the truck is already warmed up. IE, they warmed it up for you, I'd worry that they are trying to hide something.... Check under the oil cap for white goo, that can indicate that water has been in the oil... Best of Luck! :D

ENGNBLDR.COM for a timing cover and rubber backed steel timing kit for $98.00 to my door.
These are not crap parts.
I have used several and no problems.
Why pay stealership prices when you can do the same thing cheaper?

I used ENGNBLDR's kit, came with timing cover, oil pump, H2O pump(metal fins), timing set(steel rail), and then+ new head bolts all for 196.00 bucks to the door. Seem to be quality parts, perfect fit, just wish they would make my truck run.LOL, or tell me what I fawkt up.
