if you have to pay someone to do all the work for you... it might be cheaper to buy a new tub and have it painted...

but if you have a welder and time, probably cheaper to rebuild it. all and all it is not that bad, but labor adds up fast!

That's what I was thinking. Those are really the only problem spots and frame is pretty solid.

My lady's uncle is a big hot rod guy, pretty famous one too. He's got good knowhow for painting rods and figured he could step in on this project.

I would message that tub back into shape, one issue at a time, as to not leave the 40 sitting for too long with out being enjoyed...I see no need to go out and buy a new tub...but hey, that's just me.

There are a couple good threads of guys doing just this...here are two good ones;

and

Another good thread to read is Destin's '64 restoration...

There are other really good restoration threads...so take your time to look around...you'll find them ;)

As for the spot welds you are talking about...are those the ones on your quarter panels...cause those would actually be true to any original FJ40, and just one of those things a purist will look for. There are many 40s who had these spot weld dimples filled in, and while very nice, it is not what an early 40 should look like.

I'll be taking my time for sure. Right now I need to swap the motor, do some weather stripping, replace a here and there wire or hose to get her up and running. Even going so far as to go back and rebuild the original motor with original parts so I can swap it back in again.

 The ones about mid way down the quarters? I thought that was a sign the quarters had rust and had been removed. I guess this is in even better condition than I realized. I knew the frame was solid but if even more of the body is in even better shape than I thought then ... dang :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Thanks for the links. I've got a lot of reading to do.

First and foremost however is getting all the information gathered for the motor swap. I need all the specs for the motor (spark plugs, valves, torque for the head, timing), any clutch/pressure plate specs, and maybe a list of possible gaskets I'll need along the way (already got a head&valve cover).

I saw some stuff in the FAQ's but many, many, many links aren't working and pics are long gone.

Who in the :censor: is running the FAQ !!!!! (shhh, don't tell Poser I said that)

Cool that you found a similar engine for the swap...I think that the '67 also had the F135. Even smarter to keep the original, and restore it to eventually put back in. These old engines are getting hard to find parts for, so hanging on to the complete spare engine after all is done (and keep it in running condition on a stand) would be a smart move also.

Many of the older 40s had some rust swell where those dimples show up, and make the spot welds much more pronounced...especially the north eastern rigs. I am guessing that where your wheel wells are spot welded to your quarter panels, that this rust issue would be almost none existent in your south western rig...so you should be quite please with you purchase :)

When you get a chance, you should post up more pics...we all like more pics

Thanks guys.

More pics are coming. I'll also do a build thread, etc. etc.

Good luck with your new 40' I love mine to death.

Although in some poor shape, this was a find nonetheless. An original Owners Manual from 1966?

Check around, It may be cheaper to buy a complete kit for your seals and gaskets. Buying them one by one can be expensive. There are several places that have re build kits. I would check Mark's,Man a Fre, CCOT, ACC, and Cruiser outfitters for sure. You might also want to check with Toyota. They have a lot of the gaskets you might need. Some dealers give discounts to TLCA members. Good luck.
