I should maybe mention that the mirrors, gas cap, and bumperettes were also body color, and you'll notice the white pyramid mats on the running boards.

Paint might be a little old, so I would try and get it scanned to get a better match than if you simply got new paint.

BTW...great story behind its location and the proximity to you and your dad.

Looking forward to more pics when you get them

you've got the purist's eye. Thanks for the pics. That's what I really needed. Might try and locate a couple Spring Green pics too to help me through the build.

One thing that gets me confused plenty is the windshield window frame differences between around '64-'67. I've got a later '65 registered as a '66 but there's no vent in the lower frame of the window. Huh, I thought was a feature on '65. Also, due to the vent, the windshields were shorter so that baffled me a bit when were looking through the paperwork and finding it closer to '65 than '66. I'm feeling better after seeing the pic above because that makes me less fearful I got a replaced windshield and frame.

Interesting in the pics you provided, the front wheel's moon caps are complete not partials with the manual hub sticking through. And also, I thought both the '66 and '65 had non painted hood latch springs.

What I have found out is that the lock out hubs on the front wheels were a dealer installed option, and your '65 would have had drive plates, or drive flanges, which did not necessitate a hole in the front hubcaps.
First pic is a drive flange.

The windshield with the lower front vent, plus true bug catcher doors (wing window opens forward) was part of the corrugated top models...which ended mid 1965. So when the new top model was introduced in mid 1965 (like on your '65), it had the newer "ventless"windshield, and regular wing windows on the doors.
Two bottom pics are pics I had found on the web showing an early '65 corrugated top model with the vent in the windshield.

Edit: Note the longer running boards, and slanted air intake vent for the heater...the '64 model and earlier had short running boards, plus no heater air intake vent.

Hope this helps

Keep her stock as much as you can. Safety things like disc brakes are ok in my book. Just my 2 cents. I have always liked the diagonal air intake vents, they are unique and almost bought one for my 67. Very nice find, hope she serves you well!

Thanks and Good luck

Darin,
Glad to see you here! I know you'll enjoy her. I'll get another one after I get a few projects out of the way. I know someone is storing one for me somewhere.
Here's another pic for you.

Welcome to the 100 + 40 Owners club! Great project truck.

Thanks guys. I'm loving it already. A 100 for DD duty and a 40 for those leisurely days down at the beach or on a drive up the California coast.

Now if a local Mudder can loan me a picker for 3-4 days, I'll be set to start this project off right.

Oh, and Rob, that pic is just awesome. Love the snow all over the truck.

I'ld be mothballing the 100 and driving that beast around from now on....but I could be biased

I still do not know why you see this as a project. Once you do the frame off you are talking about, you will lose all the character your 40 has built up over the years that makes this rig unique. Seriously, in my opinion, you would be making a big mistake. Once newly painted, it would look just like any other freshly painted 40 :meh:

At this point, I would suggest you take some time and read some old Land Rover forums...I love the way some preserve their old rigs, and work hard to keep the old character and patina their rigs have built up over the years. If my rig was as nice as yours, this is what I would be doing...but unfortunately, my rig needs a little more help.

If it were me, I would check the steering and the brakes, including the parking brake, and make sure they are safe. Change all the fluids, clean it up, and enjoy it as is...again...my 0.02

I agree w/ MWSNFJ. But it is your truck and you can do what you want but most people(me) have to start with this...

and have no choice but to restore.

There are very few survivors out there. Yours looks great.

Wow that's clean .... Keep stock or build it like you want it... It's yours do what you want.

Oh, and yes, it is your rig, and you should do what you want, and I am sure it will look great no matter what you end up doing

I was just sharing my humble opinion...hope my previous post doesn't make me look like an a$$

I am not thinking of a frame off restoration. Nowhere near.

The head is cracked and the motor is running poorly. I secured another motor from a '66 and need to drop it in. Meanwhile, I'll hang on to the original motor and get it rebuilt properly.

Also there is some rust I have to deal with.

Need to deal with some rust down the road and I want to start planning now for how to deal with it. So the spots are ... under the doors front and rear (but the doors themselves are in great shape) and also the inside of the wheel well.

What do you all think? Does this require full new tub or is this cut and replace the local area? I think the DS rear quarter was already replaced as I can see some spot welds underneath the paint mid way up the quarter. The belly pic shows a pretty rusty exhaust pipe and plenty of oil but aside from that the frame and belly look ok...?

Hmmm...that don't look too pretty...

My wife said no FJ - what would you do? The rear sill obviously needs to be replace but the whole tub?
