I've heard two stories. They both cannot be true.

I've heard that 55 and 40 water pumps are the same.

I've heard they were not the same.

1. Which is it?

2. Are the pump shafts in the same place?

3. Are the fan mountings the same distance from the block? If the 40 is shorter would it be enough to be able to squeeze a pump and fan clutch between the motor and radiator? Assuming the shaft is in the same place on both pumps.

4. I'm assuming the connection to the thermostat housing is the same but what about the intake?

The reason for bringing this up was I saw this today. It lists two different pumps for a 40 and a 55. They look different in distance on fan mounting. Click on each picture.

I would really like to know as I'm getting ready to order a water pump from the dealer.

The dealer told me that 40 and 55 water pumps at least for some part are the same.

ETA: I looked at the 3 jpgs of the water pumps.

It definitely looks to me like the second one (55 only) is longer than the first one (40) and the third one (40 and 55). The water pump on my 76 was too short to fit a fan clutch and the bolts didn't line up either.

The bolt holes look the same at first glance. The prices look much better than OEM.

Water pumps are water pumps. I think...
40 and 55 are the same.
You can't fit a clutchfan in a Pig with an F engine (well, you can. But only in the very late Pigs with the 2-row radiator core).
The fan mountings are the same difference from the block, but Pig radiators are closer to the block.

The two pics I looked at in your link show two different fan mount flanges. One for clutch, one not.

I'm pretty sure I don't have room for a clutch fan on my 76 pig. I'm installing a 83 2F and have to scrap the fan clutch unless I want to move the radiator forward.

pre clutch fan they are the same... there are wierd iterations, like CA got oil coolers in late 75 without fan clutch. Also, after 8/'76 FJ55 pumps were different than 40 series since no clutch.

Some 79's got clutch fans and two core radiators. I have a two core 79 radiator and it came from an original 79 non AC Fj55, with a fan clutch.

so, basically, AFAIK, a non oil cooler FJ55 had the same WP as a 75-8/'76 FJ40, and a later FJ55 with cooler had a waterpump like a CA model Fj40 from 75-8/'76 which had the oil cooler W/O clutch...

Marshall...thanks for starting this thread since I may soon need one. So it has been decided that early pigs/40's are the same pump? Did you end up getting one from Toyota? Or another source? Just wanted to check on vendors before I make a purchase. Many Thanks, Dave

I've been through a few waterpumps over the last 20 years...you can get one just about anywhere. Napa, Kragen, Pepboys etc. They will ask if it has an oil cooler or not. I got one for an oil cooler, even though I don't run an oil cooler. Found that extra hole is a fine place to put a sender for a mechanical watertemp gauge. I don't worry about the fanclutch/no fanclutch question either. You can swap your old fan flange to your new waterpump. So you can make just about any F/2F waterpump fit your F engine and work in your Pig.

Thanks Pighead.....called our O'Reilly's and they can order for about 40 bucks....this is rare here in Rome. Even our foreign auto parts shop never have my parts in stock/or can order so that's why I'm always checking on vendors.

i can add that water pumps on 2F's are different shaft lengths between 55 and 60 series. i found this out when i dropped a 83 2F in a 76 pig, needed the shorter pig shaft. so maybe all pigs with 2F's are short shaft, maybe all F engine pigs are short shaft also. the interesting part about it is that the pig didnt have a clutch fan where the 60 did, so youd think the shaft length would be opposite.
