The descriptions quote leaves me wondering...

Flip the activator switch to air compressor and discover the powerplant's can-do attitude. It puts out 12 cfm @ 0 psi, with a 1/2 gallon storage tank.

The 12 cfm is nice, but 0 psi?

Well, yes. The smaller the pressure differential, the greater the flow. Just think how long it will take, at 12 cfm, to blow up your county. Jokes aside, this is the number you use for inflating air mattresses, zodiacs, sheep, inner tubes, etc.

inflating sheep? i thought that was a Kiwi thing, not a Western MA thing.

Ah yes. We have to work our Border Collies. You inflate a sheep, and when the air escapes... Besides, I'm a Candaian citizen, eh.

Back to the powerplant and another Western MA post. Why would the winch motor wear out that fast? How does Oasis handle it?

I think he would be refering to making the motor run a lot more. The more use something has usually the quicker it will wear out. So if you use your air compressor a lot the winch motor will also begin to wear (same motor).

Looks like a good way to wear out your winch motor.

Running an air compressor is not a big load as compared to some of our winching sessions where the motor gets extremely hot. As long as the motor stays cool, I think it will be ok. However, if one can reduce the cycle time for the air compressor by adding a 2.5 gallon air tank (or larger), then the motor will have a long lasting life.

I'm sure the smart folks at Warn have already thought about the duty cycle of this motor and have designed it accordingly.

For those of you with sliders, these may be viable option as air tanks. This is a highly controversial topic in the past. Let's not discuss the pros/cons of using the sliders on this thread as it has been beaten to death elsewhere! But, it's easy to drill and tap the sliders for an air fitting or two.

My .02 cents!

I'm not trying to be down on neat new piece of equipment... it's just that the market is full of engineered obsolescence more so now than ever before. It's bad enough that the winch sits out on the front of the vehicle, exposed to the weather, mud and crud. It seems once a month I catch a post somewhere about my winch won't work/full of mud...So hey, let's put the compressor out there too... and use the winch motor to run it. Also, if the motor does go out, now you have no winch and no air.

Western MA rules!

I saw this quote on another forum regarding the new powerplant...

"I think it's a solution in search of a problem. A winch should be as simple and reliable as possible, as should an air source. Combining them adds complexity to both that didn't exist before."

I couldn't agree more...

I think it is a great idea for redundancy, but I'm still undecided on the unit as a whole. Leave it to Warn to make a great product, but if it falls off the market it won't be the first "great" Warn idea that didn't take off (XCL Suspensions, Landcruiser FF kits, birf eliminators, etc ;))

Someone did mention that it won't block any more air than an 8274, not true. An 8274 most commonly mounts between the frame rails, sometime half of the winch is below the top of the frame, not possible with the wider powerplant (and many of Warns other winches). I noticed cooling changes with the addition of my integrated winch (TI9.5), I can only imaging similar (worse) issues with the powerplant. The picture of the powerplant on the TJ on Warns site is telling enough

Perhaps I'm wrong, but Warn gives a current draw of 365 A (at 14.4V, presumably) at 12K lbs. That's 7+hp. A 5CFM@90 compressor is usually a 5hp 'peak' (i.e., a 2.25-2.5 hp - a maximum of 15A at 110AC). I also imagine the duty cycle of the compressor to be less, even when airing up - and you do that only once a day. On the gripping hand, I own and use air compressors, but I only have a hand winch (thanks, Kurt!), which I occasionally use for pulling stumps.

To me the greatest appeal of something like the Power Plant (great thread! the big brother of Face Plant!) would be the space saving.
