As being a fellow owner of diesel VW's, I am worried when you said little to no tools required to replace the belt (assume you have either an ALH or AHU engine code based on the headlight comment). These engines are pretty particular when it comes to timing belt alignment. The window for getting them just right is really tight. There are about 5-7 special tools that are pretty necessary to do it right. As I mentioned, getting the timing just right (especially the injection pump) is pretty sensitive (to adjust you need a Vag-Com to communicate with the computer and confirm injection timing). TDIClub.com as mentioned above, has a wealth of knowledge and very competent people. Would hate for you to trash a good TDI.
