Jeff:

Glad it's getting some work done!

I'm back to being on Reserve in Denver most of the time, so feel free if you want a hand with anything. I get used rarely, so I have ample time to kill waiting for them to call me...

Dan

Well, whenever you wanna come up, I've got a whse to work in, and a place for ya to crash out....and plenty of apre' work beverages to consume!

Hope you're doin' well!! Lets chat this week!

Here's a close-up of the TRD wheel for Mossman40 . .. . they'll require a 1" spacer on your 40, as the steering links rub on the rim. Even with the 1+" of spacing, she looks sharp! Not too bad of an offset with the TRD wheels.

CruiserJeff,

Those look much better than I was expecting. I've got some 245/75/16's laying around the garage and those Ivan's so I might see what it looks like on mine. Tires might be too small for my liking. Yours looks very nice and I appreciate the tech info on the spacers. Balancing my Ivan's has been a real pain in the behind though. They are really touchy when I throw them on my Tacoma. Thanks again.

ColoCruiserJeff,

That's a good looking 40! I like the wheels and tires to, nice looking combo. Speaking of which, you don't have an extra set of stock steelies laying around that you want to get rid of do you? I could kill two birds with one stone that way... Get a closer look at your cruiser, and find a set of stock steelies! :D Anyway, keep up the good work, you don't have to far to go!

Mossman40- The Ivan wheels would NOT balance well on the Tacoma - I was amazed! Regardless of how many times I went back to Discount Tire - they couldn't get 'em right. About 45-50 mph a horrible wobble would develop, and they could never figure it out.

The problem with these rims is that they have a 'screw-on' center cap. When the balancer tries to balance them on the center cone, it is off-set because of the threading of the wheel to accept the cap. If your tire shop has a 'finger-balancer' they can put all 6- 'fingers' into the lugnut holes, and balance the rim based on them-instead of the center hub hole.

You may want to have them 'static-balanced' in lieu of the standard balancing process....this worked well on the set of 285/75/16 retreads.

Best of luck on your project!!

I've got a set of steelies on GreenGoblin (donor truck) that I'll likely not have much use for. Come on up, get greasy helpin out with the tranny or axle-swap, and you've got a set of wheels :)

Hit me up whenever you're in Denver!

Man, it's a deal! I usually have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Don't know if that would fit in your schedule. But if not, I have a weekend off once a month and I know that as long as I dropped the :princess: off with her sister in the springs, she'd be perfectly happy.. I'll PM you when I'm headed up next!

Well, I got the OME suspension installed this evening - well completed the install this evening. It took about 10hours total working on it for me along with some help from a co-worker earlier in the week.

The only problem I have with the suspension is that I can't go test it out yet - as the truck has no brakes and it won't idle.

Is it possible for the 2F motor to run with the timing 180deg off?? For some reason, no matter how far I rotate the dizzy cap, I can't see the BB in the sight window with the timing light on the #1 cyl.

She'll start and run, upon shut-off she'll 'diesel up' like mad, and spit gas out the carb top. Not running smoothly at all on the lower RPM, but at full-bore it runs like a top!

I'll probably take it to SafariLTD in Grand Junction, CO for a tune-up and a checkout for all systems GO!

I completed the 76' axle swap onto Voodoo, however, I didn't paint them prior to installation - just pressure washed the hell out of 'em and bolted 'em up. I'm too close on time to paint them - and they weren't all that bad to begin with. I may do some touch-up on the undercarriage paint as we go, but not the highest priority at the moment.

On the lines of safety.....

Anyone have a good lead on a 4-point restraint setup? I'll need 4 of 'em.....one for everyone!

Also, roll-cage comes to mind. I have 2- stock FJ40 roll bars - maybe be able to think my way into a family cage with all the metal laying around here :)

I'll post up some photos tomorrow of the progress today.

I took Voodoo out to SafariLTD late this week, and had them work on the timing - as I couldn't get the BB into the sight-window.

After a few hours of diagnosis, they found the DUI dizzy to be faulty. The ignition module inside the dizzy had failed, and the bearing/bushing inside was allowing the timing to 'walk' and not stabilize.

So, I made the trek out to Proffitt's new shop....Jeremiah had a 60 series ignition setup along with coil and dizzy - so I picked that up. - THANKS JEREMIAH!!!!

I got back to Grand Junction and gave Hugh's team at Safari the new dizzy and ignition setup, and they quickly got on it to see whats going on.

About 3 hours later, they had it running, timing setup and everything running like a 2F should!

Thanks so much to all of you for your help, I appreciate it greatly.

After about 7 hours of snowing and raining, I got 'er home to Denver, snowpacked and iced up on the trailer :)

I'll get it hosed down and cleaned back up for more surgery this week.

Color name was Voodoo Blue from PPG - Base/Clear. Unfortunately, I don't have any left, and I didn't keep the gallon. PPG Deltron I beleive- but I could be wrong.

Man - a lot has changed / made progress since the last time I've posted up on there.

Let me bring it into perspective:

After numerous attempts to get the lift installed - it took a ton more work than I had anticipated. Every bolt on the 74 broke off - I was able to get it squared up - but I think the rear shackle angle is off - they're practically vertical! I think it'll settle down after a few on/off road miles.

This past week, I've got the dash-box in from the "DashMan" here on Mud.....Kick ass awesome product! Instead of installing the insert-nuts into the dash- I just drilled out the holes in the dash and installed 10mm nuts with lock-washers thru the dash. Much more secure than the fitment that he suggested. This was a little bit more involved than the suggested install....but worth the added efforts.

I also had a windshield installed by Elite/Safelite. Quite a pain to source a cost-effective gasket moulding - they ended up finding one from a Toyota dealer and had it shipped asap. The guy had to cut the glass and make it a custom-fit....as no one had the windshield in-stock. I'm pleased with it after it's all said and done.

I've finally got the front-seats installed - but the seatbelts have given me crap ever since I started the project.
I had to switch away from the 4-point units and go with the retractable ones from 4WheelParts. They were the same $$, and they just installed better than fabbing up a mounting bracket behind the front seats.

I thought long and hard about going back to a 3-point retractable belt...in hopes that the 4-point would be easier to install....but I was totally wrong. The 3-point belts from 4WheelParts are simple to install and are made quite well.

I think it'll be best to have the same belts on all 4-seats - that way everything is simple.

I may have to put a taller rear-rollbar section in - to support the shoulder harness....we'll have to see about that design this week. I have a 2nd rollbar from another 40 - I may just use the taller section from that one in the back of the 40...and use a similar thickness crossbar between the 2 rollbars. Hard to describe - but I'll figure out a way to describe it with a photo.

Anyone have any ideas for rear-view mirrors on soft-doors? Hugh at SafariLTD was thinking they had a windshield hinge-mounted set. Not wanting this to be too Jeep-ish :)

Another huge obstacle I'm seeing is that I have a F-motor intake manifold and a 2F carb.

What this does is force me to use the 2F air cleaner - however since the manifolds were different depths (longer distance from the block) on the later motors....this puts my carb too close to the block.

The problem is that the 2F air cleaner doesn't fit - as the bolt holes don't match up at all now. It pushes the air cleaner about 1.5 inches too far to the passenger side - and it won't match up.

I have seen 1 photo of a Downey Aluminum Air Cleaner for the 40....but I can't find it anywhere. I may go with a snorkel on this buildup....but I have to have a filter! Any thoughts on an aftermarket air cleaner for this? - This is the main concern for this week, as I want to get it going and road-worthy quickly....but without a filter it's not a good thing.

Thanks!!

Hey Jeff!

Glad to hear that you are making good progress! your goin to have to post some progress pics!

Don't you have a 2F manifold? Slap that puppy on there! (You might have to check it with a straight edge to make sure you don't have to run it to a machine shop real quick):hhmm: Or is there an advantage to having an F manifold that I had'nt heard/read about?

Keep up the good work!

The only reason I have the F intake manifold on there is because - that's what I had at the time of installation - plus it was rust-free!

Swapping to the donor's 2F intake would cause me to pull off the exhaust manifold and swap the entire gasket again. - too much pain, since I've already got it exhaust-leak free and torqued down.

I'll just fab-up some mounting brackets to make the 2F intake work right - just change it a lil bit.

Photos to come after I go buy a cheapo dig camera- again. :(

Donaldson Jeff. Donaldson. You could mount it on the fender, and it would even be easier to plumb a snorkel to if you wanted.

I love industrial filtration!
