The OP of my rig made the oil plug gasket out of pure lead sheet. That baby has lasted for years and has never leaked. Take an big, old non food spoon, melt some muzzle bullets in it with propane torch, pour on to some newspaper. You should get a nice disk about 1/8 thick. Tap your drain bolt on it to mark the circle. Use utility knife to cut the circle - magic washer/gasket. Sheet lead will work too if you have any.
Yeah I have sheet lead laying all over 😅

Aight. Fuel gauge issues.

I pulled out the sender and it’s working correctly when it’s not mounted.

Once it grounds through the mounting screws it malfunctions and it reads over full.

Here are some pics

The old cluster was a J07 this one is J01. No idea what the difference is.

This is with it on full sitting outside the tank

This is at the 1/2 way point

Working fine

Install the sender. Stays correct but as soon as I run a screw in and ground it to the tank it spikes like this

Help? The guage in the old cluster is clearly broken so adding it into the new cluster is not an option. @Racer65

You can replace just the fuel gauge:

Good to know. I think I have it worked out after talking to my favorite Colombian mechanic AJ

I took the harness ground wire out of the loop and just made a little jumper for the “positive” post.

Maybe someone can explain to me how that fixed it.

Last items of the day. The blinkers stopped working. I thought it they worked before but they quit. New relay fixed it.

Powder Keg called and the tag bracket was ready. Got it installed. Need to reroute the light wire to the drivers side

Short in the harness?

Got the tag light wired up. These are supposed to ground through the mount but I guess the paint and powder was too thick. Had to run a jump ground.

My AC guy got sick and could not
Make a house call so I’m off an hour south the 49tire to see if this thing will take a charge.

I’m not 100% confident but maybe I’m just being a pessimist.

Got the truck in the shop. Added vacuum and did not have to wait long until we figured out it was leaking.

He’s pumped a bottle of juice into it and we started spraying soapy water. I think every fitting was leaking. That’s a lot of fittings.

Pull the cowl and work all the fitting and get the leaks stopped. These hoses are like -an stuff. No o rings.

Extract the R134 and add vacuum and boom. No leaks. Stunned.

Next we pumped it full and cranked it up and tried it.

No signal to the AC clutch. You can manually add 12v and the compressor lights off and the AC blows.

If you remember this system was hacked all to hell and had a toggle switch and no controller.

Now I need to figure out what wire is the signal from the controller and try a new wire. Maybe this is why they hacked into it in the first place.

In other news the fuel guage works as advertised. Another weirdo in the harness that I managed to bypass.

Don’t. Give up…. I remember how happy you were when you scored the A/C controller

I spent 2 hours of Ben’s time today jumping wires and trying to make the AC come on.

Dunno. I may be beaten. This is madding.

When I get totally stumped on something like this, or in a programming issue, I get my wife to help. She doesn't know anything about wiring or programming but breaking it down and explaining it so she understands it, and explaining the things I have tried, usually causes me to have an "A Ha" moment for the things I haven't tried or the things I have missed.

Failing that, I write an email or Mud post explaining everything I have tried and what I haven't. I don't usually send it, but having to switch my brain into explainer mode usually allows me to find the problem.

How far is it from Texas to Mississippi? Can you drive her to @wngrog
