I spoke with Rick today and he said there is a Suburban down in Hackett. The plan now is the Forest Service is requesting a helicopter removal to be done by the military. If that falls through then he will send a request to us and Bighorn for trucks and torches to cut it up and haul it out. If I recall correctly the axle is out, tie rods removed or damage but bottom line it is not towable and he didn't think flipping it on the roof and dragging it out of Hackett was a realistic option. Even if the helicopter extraction materializes they will need the random loose parts hauled out, such as the transmission laying on the ground. No idea yet when it will be as they are just starting the request process so stay tuned.

Should be exciting no matter how this plays out.

That would be pretty cool to see!
If it has to go out in pieces, I can contribute a sawzall and a small generator. May be able toget away one day this weekend.

I figured there would be no shortage of volunteers for this one.

Eric, They are just submitting the request for the helicopter and as I understand it they still need to get some paperwork approved to make the Suburban Forest Service property. So this could be in a few weeks or next Spring as the big unknown is military schedule.

I do like the generator sawzall option so I can join in on the cutting ;) My oxy acetylene tanks are too big to take down.

Yea, my tanks are to big to cart down there also - and I've heard bad things about carrying acetylene cylinders on their sides. Anything small enough to carry upright in a cruiser won't go very far.

Maybe cart an old trailer axle down there and practice our battery welding?

Curb weight on a suburban in the neighborhood of 5500 to 6000 lbs - probably more then a Huey can handle. Would likely have to be a Blackhawk or Chinook.

That would be a kick in the pants to try and get out. The helo option would be fun to watch, but it would be more fun to drag :) wish it was a little closer. Fun exercise in rigging, double lines, safety, etc. Someone has to take lots of pics regardless!

I'm not sure a blackhawk would do it at this altitude, but a Chinook would. It would be pretty sweet to witness a helicopter recovery (or disposal, in this case), no matter what type.

Anyone take a scouting trip this weekend? Thought someone might have went to check it out. ???

Talked with Greg the other day and he mentioned maybe going to check the Suburban out next weekend.

Should be a quick, fun local trip. Any interest on going on the 3rd 4th or 5th? I'd be good with going either day. :steer:

I'm not sure if this was discussed at the last club meeting but where are we at with being able to go get the 'Burban? Any possibility of extracting her before it freezes to the ground? Luke if your tires are too big I can drum up a set of worn tires probably in my take off pile to better fit the truck
