I know it's hard to place a value on anything that's not seen in person, but....

This LC is a '79 FJ55 - engine runs well. its got little problems, but for the most part the F motor sounds good. Seems to shift well and 4 wheel works.

so the question is the body.... it has had some goofy patchwork repairs done underneath, but structurally the rig has many mile of trouble-free, no parts falling off in the road - miles left in it.

the paint job is so-so, and I'm sure there is some rust covered up that will show over the next few years in bubbles, but for the most part, this '79 with PS and AC is a real looker from about 20'. it's not until you crawl under it that you realize lots of stuff wasn't fixed right, and they body guy put on some lipstick to make it look good to sell. anybody that currently owns any land cruiser would throw their neck out of alignment seeing this thing in a parking lot.

so, what do i look for, and what is a bottom dollar that is a fair price on a '79 that looks great for 10-20' and runs. It's a LONG way from being restored, but I'd don't wanna get into it finding out i paid through the nose on the front end. throw out some numbers so I have some comparatives.

pics maybe if i can get them.

i've got an 85 FJ60 right now and don't really need another, but don't want to pass up a decent buy either. Not sure how much is still available for body parts and other parts I might need to make the 55 real nice. Am I going to be scouring the earth for equally bad used parts, or are there newer parts being made for these old trucks.
thanks for the input.
Jeff

Difficult to answer to your question, even with pics. The real question is what are you ready to do for it and what does it represent for you. There is nothing rational in a passion . If you just want to wheel, find something else. if it is something else, there is no price. Look at scrappdaddy or others work. Totally irrational, and I respect love what they do. And what a pleasure when they will be achieved...Do you think there is a value to what was invested in America's cup.No, totally irrational, as in art, of feelings or passion. So I go to the first pont What does it represent to you?

For the most part, if they're free and include several grand in the glovebox, you paid way too much, from a rational perspective, considering the degree of rot most have succumbed to.

That said, given the opportunity to become infected with swine flu, symptoms noted by completely irrational behavior, I'd love to opportunity for it to be on a '79, which aren't common anyway, with factory PS and AC.

here are a few pics. not great, but best I have right now.

thanks for the reality check on the replies.

yes, microscopic size for 4/5

rear quarter chopped. to treat rust?

on the picture, it seems to be a boat near the piggie. Salted area???

Good call on the roof rack.

The '71 had a through fastened and it had rusted out about a 3/4-1" diameter area at all the penetration points.

Can't see how one could repair without pulling headliner, which opens an entirely new can of worms with window stripping and the assumed brittle material the headliner would probably be.

The window rubber is definitely brittle and broken. All of the inner rocker panels have been cut out. Probably the same on the rear. Going to see it tomorrow and will take more pictures.

Asking 6450. Offered 3K but she said no. But it's been for sale almost 2 months

The owner has no clue what she has got, but the guy she bought it from does. Neither have any mechanical skills and have spent way too much money at service shops trying to repair it. They are trying to get the repair money back out of it.

The blue part of the paint on the sides is a textured 3M paint. The top is original paint. Frame has been painted black and a lot is covered

The F motor has been the de-smogged and Weber carburetor.

I will work on the picture size and quality also.

I'm afraid this bodywork fixing will have me in pretty deep to get things done right. I've done all the mechanical stuff before, but never body work, so I'm not sure what I'm look at and in for dollar estimates.
Thanks

Yes, it should have 2F.
Weber is not original and detracts from value, as does the de-smog.
Crappy bodywork and textured paint all decrease value.
$3k tops. If they refuse, help her understand you will probably have to put $15k into it to get it in reasonable shape.
You should only buy if you an ride this project to the completion you would want for it. Too many Pigs get torn apart and then languish...

The only thing that really takes the wind out of my sails is the lack of rubber bits.

Metal can be replaced as quickly as you can throw money at it, and some panels can be bought pre formed for direct weld in. Even if you have a million dollars, finding and fitting replacement rubber can still be a challenge.

"Rubber bits" are available but pricey. $3k and no more. There's been a bunch of hacking going on. Pablo is right on with the $15k for body work - probably more if you want to get the quarter panels back. At $3k buy it and drive it
