has anyone ever done this?

with the spare tire removed (mines going outside on a rack) it looks as though there is plenty of room.

i like the fact that my speed hut gauges ( that had to be calibrated to match the senders ohms) would work with the second tank.

brackets would be easy to fab up.

is there any reason why this would be a bad idea. the fill hose seems to be the only problematic issue but that would be the case with any aux tank.

ive been looking on craigslist for a suitable alternative and have yet to find one. and i was under the rear end of my rig working on the bumper and the thought occurred to me "there is enough room under there for a second tank." was thinking i would plumb the fill hole into the rear bumper somehow.

So is there any obvious reason ( that i'm missing ) that this isnt a good idea i dont think the tank is any taller than the tire that was under there ?

If you have a good way to fill both tanks, vent both tanks, mount both tanks and switch between both tanks I see no reason it wouldn’t work. To me with your fab skills it seems easier and better to start fresh and build one bigger tank, I built mine in about two nights and it holds 48 gallons of fuel, I’ll give you the dimensions if you want.

I don't really have a way to fill both that doesnt require me putting a new inlet somewhere. and for vents i figured id just T into existing plumbing.

i thought about fabbing one up (I would love your dimensions in case i decide to go that way so please send them) but ive never welded aluminum or stainless. did you make yours out of mild steel? what gauge did you make yours out of?

i would perfer to have one big tank back there just less hassles overall. i was just thinking of 2 oem tanks as settling for the easy option.

I used exactly one 4’X8’ sheet of 0.1” 5052 H32 aluminum for the tank and baffles only because that’s what was available to me, I would have been just as happy to build from 11 or 12 gauge mild steel. Ill dig up some photos and dimensions for you.

I would think by the time you buy a fuel tank selector valve, mod the tank for a fill and buy all the accessories and hose to make a filler and get everything securely mounted you could make a tank for about the same time and money.
