I am in the middle of troubleshooting a vibration between 20-25mph. Just happened two days ago on the interstate.

I thought maybe the tires needed rebalance so I did that. They did BUT no change to the vibration.

I had a shop replace my u joints last year because I do not have a press AND and I do not like the hammer idea.

I checked them now and BOTH have a great deal of play-the joint by the transfer especially.

I looked in my FSM and the clearance/play is supposed to be .05mm which I assume is almost no play.

I have done U Joints before and I recall a very very low clearance i.e. the joints were very tight with little play.

Is that your experience?

Thanks.

There should be no play in the U Joint from my experience. I have also heard that there is really no acceptable substitute to the Toyota OEM ones. Not sure what you used but apparently everything else is crap. The original ones in my 85 4Runner seem to be still in good shape.

you need this tool

eBay Motors: Astro 7865 Ball Joint Service Tool with 4-wheel Dr. Adp (item 320227875069 end time Jun-11-08 09:09:10 PDT)

i use it for all kinds of u joints and for other applications.

just replace your ujoints and be done with it.

if you just did them, and they are failing, maybe your shaft angle is too steep.

wait, your truck is stock right?

if so, then those joints are just junk.

try OEM joints. seems like the stock joints on my 80 have held up well, despite my best attempts at killing that truck.

also a place called OX makes some tuff joints

Yeah, I think they were just junk.

I do not have a lift or anything.

OE ones were 75.00 !!!!!

So, I bought some Nappa/Precision joints. We shall see how long these last.

Well, I don't value my time like that ( :

I find that when you do, you tend to talk yourself out of doing things by equating leisure time with "work" time in terms of monetary value. Those two concepts, in my opinion, should never be intermingled and it causes us to never relax and take time as just that-time.

Just my .02.

Sooooo you're a slacker? :D

..... McFly..... Hehehe

No, I used to be someone that only thought about what time was worth and worked past/didn't see life's true details/importances. Thinking your time is referenced to loss i.e. what could you have done/what did that cost etc leaves one living in the future too much.

Just my .02 but I will never live that lifestyle again. It kills your soul and loose what is most important-the Now.

By the way, truck fixed! Had to pay for a shop to press on the joints but I removed the shaft so it was not that bad.

Thanks all

Glad to hear that it's done. Not to turn this into a chat session but you may have misunderstood me before. I value my time that way so that I don't do a lot of things that I used to do myself to keep from paying someone else. In other words, more time for things that I enjoy doing and for the family. Not that I don't enjoy certain types of wrenching....but pressing in U-Joints isn't in that category!

I hope these last better for you.

I follow you eagle. Sounds like we are on the same page.

Yeah, we will see how long these last.
