White Rhino Takes on Alaska

For those of you who are still wondering how the slee solid axle 100 aka White Rhino wheels. The answer is incredible, with wheels just as good if not better then the 80. It handles water crossings better then the 80, since it does not have a distributor. The only trouble I had with the ACT ( Alaska Cruiser Trek) was the water and silt getting in to my alternator, but a quick removal of the alternator in the field no doubt, cleaning it got it working again. Removing the IFS makes working on the 100 so much easier. I only had to remove the power steering pump to pull the alternator. No need to drain the radiator and pull it to get to it. The ACT was not a rock crawling fest, but it was real world expedition type stuff. River crossing, to many to even count. A drive up a glacier, mud bogs, the SAS 100 took everything that Alaska could throw at her. After checking her over, there was no water in the front axle, it was water tight. Only evidence of water, was the rear axle, but only minor and a easy fix. It cruised to and from Alaska, with very good road manors, cruising at 75 mph getting 11 mpg, on 36inch KM2 on 18 inch rims.

Will post more once the group puts there pictures on the net.

Awesome to hear the update, I'm sure Slee is proud as the happy papa!

What wheels are those, some 18" bead locks probably made for a Tundra?! Or did you convert to 6 bolt with the SAS?

They are Pro Comp, but not sure which model, and the bead locks are faux.

Good to hear! I, along with everyone, was wondering how you and your new rig were doing up there!

Sounds like an awesome trip!

Did you have any issues with VSC or TRAC, if it is still hooked up?

What a expedition! Great to see a 100 boldly go…
Were you carrying 6 cans of gas or did green ones have something else.

As matter of fact, both kicked in, the vsc kicked in going do a 10% grade with a hair pin turn, sort of freaked me out, I was not expecting it to kick in, but I guess it was the oversized tires and the turn that forced it to kick in. Actrac kicked in while I had the rear diff locked, but only for a brief moment.

I was carring 4 military 20L specter cans, and 2 red blitz cans (total of 30 extra gallons) along with 4 water cans. The empties went on the roof rack to make space. I took way to much stuff I did not need. But gas was not one of them, I probably got 3 mpg on the trail. I used all 55 gallons for the 10 days.

Just and update, issues that I am having now, while driving home. KM2 rear passenger had a sidewall tear that had to be replaced in Ft St Johns BC. The starter is starting to go out. Other than that, we are all good. 2500 more miles to go.

stop by spresso's on your way home and you guys can have a starter party.

Make it home safe, the big stuffs already behind ya!

Looks like a blast, your 100 is my favorite one on the planet.

So the starter slowly dies?
I've been under the impression that it just cuts out, that's good to hear.
What are the signs that it's going out?

it doesnt start for a while...then magically does, if you're lucky.

It took six tries to get it started after changing the tire, I now fill the pump with the engine running, at least till I get home

Your rig is beyond words, love it! Glad to hear you're on your way home.

Since you are SAS'd and with all that you've encountered during ACT, how do you think other IFS 100s would perform out there?

My understanding from reading about ACT is you need a minimum of 4" lift and 35" tires just to clear the water crossing on the trip. So pretty much a IFS 100 is out of the question.
