#1 - Are the 55 upper and lower fender parts meant to come apart? I see that there are two bolts (one on each end) but when I remove them and attempt to pull the two parts apart it appears that there may be some type of spot weld holding them together but it just may be rust. I feel there is rust in between them that needs attending to.

#2 - I know this has been covered in other ways but what have you guys done specific to pigs for fixing the normal rust behind the front wheels? I thought of either cutting it out and replacing metal or maybe fiberglassing which I have had success in the past. My rust through areas are not real bad but need fixing. Has anybody had to cut out the vertical brace behind this area to get to the panel?

Thanks

Yup, you should be able to get the upper and lower fenders apart. I did that once. No, twice. Once on each side. There's a lot more than 2 bolts holding them together. Seems like I had to bust 20 bolts to get those apart...

What to do for the front fender rust? I just ignore it. That works.

Fender

Mine is a 73 and I believe they are spot welded. When you took them apart what did you do when you put then back together? I could see drilling holes and using bolts.

Rust behind front wheels..........best fix is to replace sheet metal.IMO fiberglassing only hides the problem and it will come back much worse; Ehsan from this forum made up 10 sets of fender patches and from personal experience they work very very well.HTH

I put a pair of '69 lowers on my '74 uppers. A long time ago. I can see 15 or 16 boltheads running along the underside of the fender where they join...I don't recall having to bust any spotwelds, just lots of bolts.

I just want to make sure I was clear on my post. All the fenders I have seen had have lots of bolts. But I have seen a few sets that had the upper and lowers spot welded together also.

Fenders

Well mine did have bolts that I removed. They are also spot welded. I'm debating on whether I should try to seperate them. I don't want to tear them up but I fear there is rust in between that I need to deal with. I guess I could use a hacksaw blade and seperate them and come back and bolt them back later.

Never used one but how bout one of those drill bits for spot welds that Mac, Snap On and others make?

Fenders

OK, for futre reference my pig is a 73 model and my fenders DID have spot welds. I was able to seperate the upper and lower by sliding a flathead screwdriver in there and cut each one with a sawzall. Not a big deal. It was a good thing I seperated them in that there was rust in there. I am currently wire-wheeling and sanding and treating rust. I still have yet to decide how I am going to tackle the rusted through areas in the lower fenders. The rust through areas are no as bad as most I've seen but it does need attention.
